Davis
Evidentiary
Hearing
Set for
June 23
Troy Davis
The Supreme Court
ordered hearing for Georgia
death row prisoner Troy
Anthony Davis will take place
on Wednesday, June 23. In
August, the nation’s highest
court ordered a federal district
court in Georgia to “receive
testimony and make findings
of fact as to whether evidence
that could not have been
obtained at the time of trial
clearly establishes his inno
cence.”
Davis was convicted for
the 1989 killing of a white
police officer. Since then,
seven of the nine non-police
witnesses have recanted their
testimony, and there is no
physical evidence tying him to
the crime scene.
In 2001, on Davis’
behalf, twenty-one exculpatory
affidavits were submitted to a
federal court in Georgia. These
affidavits contained recanta
tions from all but two of the
prosecution eyewitnesses, the
testimony of another previous
ly undiscovered eyewitness
and others with information
bearing on the crime—all
strong evidence suggesting
Davis was not the gunman and
is, in fact, innocent of the
crimes for which he was sen
tenced to death.
Support for Davis has
poured in from around the
U.S., and the world. Former
President Jimmy Carter, Actor
and activist Harry Belafonte,
Rev. A1 Sharpton, Archbishop
Desmond Tutu, Pope Benedict,
XVI have all spoken out on his
behalf.

Signs
Debt
Relief Bill
for Haiti
Pres. Barack Obama
Special to the NNPA from the
Afro-American Newspapers
WASHINGTON (NNPA)
- President Obama has signed
into law a bill calling for the
United States to take the lead in
forgiving debt owed to interna
tional lenders by earthquake-
ravaged Haiti.
The bill, signed April
26, urges major multinational
institutions to cancel all debt
owed to them by Haiti and rec
ommends that all aid to the
country for the next five years
be provided in the form of
grants rather than loans.
“The President’s sig
nature on this bill is further
indication of the United States’
support for the people of Haiti,”
Congresswoman Maxine
Waters (D-Calif.), who spon
sored the House version of the
bill, said in a statement.
The bill was approved in
the House on April 14 and
passed the Senate earlier in
April.
Under the measure, the
Treasury Department is
required to instruct U.S. execu
tives at the International
Monetary Fund, the World
Bank and other institutions to
use the force and influential
power of the United States to
cancel Haiti’s debt.
The bill calls for Haiti to
receive aid in the form of grants
until Feb. 1, 2015. Following
that date, multilateral develop
ment institutions may resume
aid in the form of new loans.
