SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY NEWS
Sol C. Johnson to host Mega Fest
Sol C. Johnson is host
ing their sixth annual Mega
Fest! Sol C. Johnson is hold
ing this festive event on
Thursday May 13, 2010
from 5:30-7:30 pm in the
Johnson High Commons
Area. Mega Fest is an event
to inform our Johnson new
comers and parents as well
as staff and the community
about what to expect during
the 2010-2011 school year.
Not only will we inform
everyone about what to
expect but we also want to
let people obtain information
and highlight our accom
plishments as a School.
The Mega Fest
‘‘Celebrating Success” event
will be jam packed with fun,
entertainment, and informa
tion about the school- com
munity. All student organiza
tions will have booths set up
in the Johnson Commons
Area to discuss their pro
grams, highlight accomplish
ments, and increase their
membership.
More than 30 different
academic, social, communi
ty, and performance organi
zations are available for our
students to explore them all.
There will be an orientation
meeting in the Auditorium
for the rising 9th graders and
their parents. The orientation
meeting will provide infor
mation about uniforms,
small learning communities
and career pathways.
Students and parents will
have the opportunity to meet
with counselors and their
future peers.
With a whole new
group coming into Johnson,
we want them to be informed
about what the school has to
offer in the area of academic
pathways as well as organi
zations and clubs. We also
want to get to know every
one a head of time so we can
better understand their needs
as students.
We have live perform
ances from our Bands,
Chorus, student Soloists. We
also have Performances from
Cheerleaders, Dance Line,
and Robotics Team.
Parents, teachers, and
students play a critical role in
Johnson's success in opera
tion and performance by
partnering with the school
and the community to offer a
variety of learning and
exploring opportunities for
our youth. By students being
involved in the complete
school experience they tend
to perform better and they
are more likely to graduate
from high school.
This event will remind
parents and the community
that together we can ensure a
bright future for them by
providing our input with aca
demic, social, and creative
experiences. Let's help our
newcomers have a smooth
and exciting transition.

“This play explores the

comedies and tragedies that

broke, don’t fix it’ attitude,
and the radical family mem

tide.”
The 1990 Pulitzer Prize
winning play by August
Wilson, set in the 1930s, fol
lows an African American
family’s conflict over an
heirloom piano. The piano

ily’s white master for two of
the family’s ancestors. The
play explores the struggle of
becoming liberated from a
painful legacy without los
ing cultural values.
Directed by Vickie
Blackshear, the production
features Gary Swindell, Jr.
as “Boy Willie” and
Charlene Williams as
Gary Swindell, Jr. and Charlene Williams in August
Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson”
“Bemiece”.
“I hope people will see that there are ups and downs to tradi
tion and change,” says Blackshear. “If you stick to ‘what is’
then how will you ever know ‘what can be’?”
