O n Saturday, May 22,
the SSU National
Alumni Association
held a scholarship benefit at
the Desoto Hilton.
The benefit was also an
opportunity for the associa
tion to honor nine women of
influence who are all gradu
ates of the university as well.
Among the honorees
were Dr. Sandra McCord
Best, Chief Human
Resources Officer for
Savannah State University;
Ms. Virginia Edwards,
retired educator, and former
superintendent of Savannah
Chatham County Schools;
Dr. Dionne Hoskins, director
of National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration
Programs, SSU; Mrs.
Vanessa Miller-Kaigler,
Purchasing Director,
Savannah Chatham County
Public School System; Ms.
Patricia Mathis, President
and CEO of Pat Mathis
Construction Company; Dr.
Ava Phoenix, practicing
physican at A Place for
Women, Jacksonville, FL.;
Bettina Tate, marketing
teacher, Johnson High
School. Dr. Priscilla Thomas,
retired school administrator,
and current Chatham County
Commissioner; and Dr.
Clemontine Washington,
Mayor of Midway, Ga., and
retired school administrator.

Civil Rights Museum Holds An
“Evening” to Remember
On Friday, May 21, The
Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights
Museum presented “An
Evening at the Museum.”
This exciting event afford
ed the community the opportu
nity to support the museum, and
look good while doing it.
The black tie affair includ
ed a tour of the museum, and a
silent auction. Those in atten
dance were entertained by a live
band, and enjoyed some deli
cious local cuisine.
The board of directors also
presented awards to community
members who have made a dif
ference. Shown above, Susan

Hall, retired educator with the
Volunteer of the Decade Award
as board members look on.
The Chairman’s Award
was presented to Dr. Ron W.
Bailey, instructor of African
American History at Savannah
State University.

and auctioneer.
Black Publishers
to Celebrate 70th
Anniversary

WASHINGTON
(NNPA) - The Nation's only
association of Black newspa
per publishers has chosen to
commemorate it's 70th year of
existence in New York City -
the birth place of the Black
press - with a line up of civil
rights giants, issues panels,
glitzy gathers and a first annu
al Legacy of Excellence din
ner. The National Newspaper
Publishers Association's annu
al summer convention will
take place at New York's
Sheraton Hotel & Towers
June 16-19.
This year's theme is
"Power to Influence Black
America."
"Our agenda is how do
we find common ground in
working together to reinforce
the challenges of the Black
press with advertising?" said
Danny Bakewell, chair of the
National Newspaper
Publishers Association and
publisher of the Los Angeles
Sentinel. "These companies
have mega budgets but they
don't advertise with the Black
press. Many of our major
companies like AT&T,
General Motors and Ford have
come back online and reunited
with the Black Press as major
partners." The con
ference will kick off with a
"Press and the Pulpit" break
fast hosted by the Rev. A1
Sharpton and a lunch with Dr.
Bernice King , daughter of
civil rights icon Rev. Martin
Luther King Jr.
The following day, a breakfast
and lunch is scheduled with
Marc Morial, president and
chief executive officer of the
National Urban League and
the Rev. Jesse Jackson fol
lowed by a panel where
national civil rights leaders
will discuss the crisis in Black
America. The panel will also
include Morial, Jackson,
NAACP's president and chief
