Class of 2010 Savannah Youth Council
Graduates
Savannah Chapter #159, O.E.S.,
Prince Hall Honored
Alderman Van John, II addresses youth council graduates
Thirty-seven 8th-graders
graduated from the City of
Savannah Youth Council pro
gram during a ceremony at
City Hall on Wednesday, June
2.
Remarks were made by
Mayor Otis Johnson,
Alderman Van R. Johnson II,
and Youth Council coordinator
Carliss Bates. Keynote Speech
was given by Derrick L. Butler
of Oglethorpe Charter School.
Several Youth Council mem
bers offered reflections on the
yearlong program, which saw
them participate in community
service projects, make regular
speeches and appearances
before City Council, and take
educational trips to places like
Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; and
the National League of Cities
Annual Conference in Texas.
Applications are now
being accepted for the Youth
Council Class of 2010-11.
Rising 8th-graders wishing to
apply should call the City of
Savannah Public Information
Office at 651-6410, or visiting

eled to the Georgia State
Capitol in Atlanta.
Representative
Stephens and his staff were
extremely gracious hosts and
the group was treated like
royalty. The invitation
included a visit to Governor
Sonny Perdue's Chambers.
Sister Ella Scott was
recognized and presented the
“Georgia Citizenship Award”
in the form of a Resolution
for her years of dedication to
her church, family, communi
ty and to Savannah
Chapter# 159 O.E.S.
On behalf of Savannah
Chapter #159, Worthy
Matron Brenda Pough,
accepted House Resolution
1473 from the House of
Representatives, which
included the following state
ment: “Now Therefore be it
resolved the members of this
body recognize and com
mend Savannah Chapter
#159 of the Order of the
Eastern Star, Prince Hall for
its many contributions to the
Savannah Community.”
Both Resolutions were pre
sented on the floor in the
House of Representative's
Chamber.
Worthy Matron Pough
gave a stirring speech of
greetings and appreciation
with a resounding response
from the body of state
Representatives. District
Matron Eddie Lee Marsh
joined the Chapter in wel
coming Grand Worthy
Matron Marilyn Moore and
Grand Worthy Patron Marvin
Knight as honored guest to
share for the historic occa
sion.
“We are forever grateful
to Rep. Mickey Stephens for
his invitation. Savannah
Chapter #159 officers and
members, with full humility,
consider it an honor and a
privilege to receive such
prestigious recognition and
awards for supporting the
Savannah community
through service,” Pough said.

Top Ladies of Distinction,
Incorporated will hold
Induction Services for fourteen
Orchids, on June 12, 2010 at the
Hilton Garden Inn located at
5711 Abercorn Street. Lady

the Orchids.
