Juneteenth Festival in Savannah:
A Celebration of Freedom
Gokh-Bi System
The Telfair proudly
presents its third annual
Juneteenth Festival, celebrat
ing the anniversary of the
end of slavery in the United
States . This year's event
focuses on the roots of
African music as well as its
impact on American music.
Throughout the week, the
Telfair will present programs
at multiple sites to explore
black history, culture, and
identity. Highlights include a
talk by author and political
commentator Farai Chideya,
a performance by the
renowned Senegalese rap
group the Gokh-Bi System,
and the third annual
Juneteenth Family Day.
Lecture by Multimedia
Journalist Farai Chideya:
“The Color of Our Future:
Race in the 21st Century”-

host of NPR’s News and
Notes, Chideya is an award
winning political reporter
and writer who has worked
in print, television, and
radio, as well as online.
Akonting Workshop
with Sana Ndiaye of the
Gokh-Bi System.Presented in
collaboration with the Ships
of the Sea Museum-June 18,
6pm; 41 Martin Luther King
Boulevard , Museum Garden
Pavilion.
Musician Sana Ndiaye will
lead a workshop on playing
the akonting—a stringed,
banjo-like instrument used in
parts of West Africa includ-

Robert L. Harris Visits Savannah

Established in 1904,
Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity is con
sidered by many to be the most
prestigious organization of
African American men in the
nation. The national Fraternity
is known as the Grand Boule,
and the Fraternity's national
convention is also called the
Grand Boule. Individual mem
bers are called “Archons.”
Alpha Lambda Boule of Sigma
Pi Phi Fraternity, chartered in
1963, includes members from
the Savannah and Hilton Head
areas.
Robert L. Harris, the
Grand Sire Archon (national
president) of Sigma Pi Phi
Fraternity, was in Savannah on
June 12th for an informal brief
ing with several members of
Alpha Lambda Boule. The visit
came on the eve of the 50th
Grand Boule that is to be held
June 19th thru 23rd in Las
Vegas, NV. The Saturday after-

James Named to St.
Joseph’s/Candler
Board of Trustees
Veteran Savannah
banker Robert E. James is the
newest member of the St.
Joseph's/Candler Board of
Trustees.
James has served as
President of Carver State
Bank since 1971, and previ
ously served as a director of
the St. Joseph's Foundation of
Savannah, Inc. In 1973, he
revived The Savannah
Tribune, one of the nation's
oldest newspapers owned by
African Americans. The
Tribune is now owned by his
wife, Shirley Barber James.
James has received
numerous awards for his com
munity service.
He is currently on the
boards of the Savannah
Economic Development
Authority, Savannah Area
Chamber of Commerce,
United Way of the Coastal
Empire and Step Up
Savannah, Inc. He is also a
Trustee of St. Philip A. M. E.
Church.
He is a life member
of the NAACP and Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity, Inc., as well as
a member of Sigma Pi Phi
Fraternity, Inc., The Frogs
Club, Inc., and 100 Black
Men of Savannah, Inc.
James earned a Bachelor
of Arts degree from Morris
Brown College and a Master
in Business Administration
degree from the Harvard
University Graduate School
of Business Administration.
He was named one of
the “100 Most Influential
Black Americans” by Ebony
magazine in 1978. The
National Bankers Association
awarded him the
Distinguished Service Award
in 2003. He received the 2004
Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil
Rights Museum Legacy
Award and the 2005 Georgia
Minority Business CEO
Diversity Award.
James and his wife,
Shirley, have one adult son,
two adult daughters and three
grandchildren.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation
Day, is an American holiday honoring African American
heritage. It commemorates the announcement of the aboli
tion of slavery in the U.S. State of Texas in 1865.
Celebrated on June 19, the term is a portmanteau of June
and nineteenth, and is recognized as a state holiday in 36
states of the United States.
