Board of Commissioners Proposes
Increase in Property Taxes
The Chatham County
Board of Commissioners
today announces its inten
tion to increase the property
taxes it will levy this year
by 0 percentage over the
rollback millage rate for
General Maintenance and
Operations taxes, 0 percent
age over the rollback mill-
age rate for Special Service
District taxes, and 0 per
centage over the rollback
millage rate for Chatham
Area Transit Authority.
Each year, the board of
tax assessors is required to
review the assessed value
for property tax purposes of
taxable property in the
county. When the trend in
prices on properties that
have recently sold in the
county indicate that there
has been an increase in the
fair market value of any
specific property, the board
of tax assessors is required
by law to re-determine the
value of such property and
increase the assessment.
This is called a reassess
ment.
When the total digest
of taxable property is pre
pared, Georgia Law
requires that a rollback
millage rate must be com
puted that will produce the
same total revenue on the
current year's new digest
that last year's millage rate
would have produced had
no reassessments occurred.
The Chatham County
Board of Commissioners is
considering adopting a mill-
age rate equal to last year's
rate. Therefore, before the
Chatham County Board of
Commissioners may final
ize the budget and set a final
millage rate, Georgia Law
requires that three public
hearings be held to allow
the public an opportunity to
express their opinions.
All concerned citizens
are invited to the public
hearings to be held at the
following locations at the
indicated times: June 22,
2010 at 9:30 AM and 6:00
PM and July 9, 2010 at 9:30
AM at the Chatham County
Commissioner's meeting
room, 124 Bull Street,
Savannah, Georgia.

African American Lectionary Provides
Resources to Help Troubled Youth,
Strengthen Young Men
The African American
Lectionary, a free online
resource which highlights
the African American eccle-
sial traditions and the liturgi
cal calendar in African
American churches, is rais
ing awareness this Father’s
day of the need to develop
the African American com
munity’s young men.
“The most important
issue facing African
American communities is
the strengthening of young
men and boys, according to
a survey of more than
10,000 African American
clergy,” said Lectionary cre
ator Reverend Martha
Simmons.
“The Lectionary pro
vides materials and
resources to the African
American community and
clergy that help to lessen the
negative stereotypes that
have been attached to black
men and fathers through
teaching, mentoring and
nurturing the youth in our
communities. Our hope is
that by creating stronger
youth and giving them the
tools to succeed, they will
ultimately grow up to be role
models for future genera
tions.”
The Lectionary recog
nizes several days that are
important to the develop
ment of black youth includ
ing Youth Sunday, Father’s
Day and Men’s Day. While
all of these days are sched
uled for specific Sundays on
the African American
Lectionary calendar, they can
be celebrated any day of the
year. Commentaries along
with scriptures correspon
ding to each day can be
found on the lectionary Web
site, www.theafricanameri-
canlectionary.org .
The African
American Lectionary pro
vides lectionary commen
tary, worship resources, and
cultural resources for wor
ship leaders in African
American churches to refer
ence when planning church
events focused on Youth
Sunday, Father’s Day and
Men’s Day. For those
churches that recognize the
development of young men
as an important issue, lec
tionary commentaries pro
vide a tool for raising aware
ness of those issues and start
ing a dialogue for change.

of material.
Since its inception in
2007, the project has met the
needs of many clergy mem
bers and served as an innova
tive way to obtain socio-cul-
tural information and ser
mons on issues facing the
African American faith com
munity.
The lectionary has had
more than three million
unique hits.
