United Way Offers Low Income
Families a Fresh Start
Ordination Service for Min.
Yusuf Shabazz
For low income families
facing critical situations due
to a loss in income or unfortu
nate economic circumstances,
help is on the way. Through
the Georgia Fresh Start pro
gram, United Way of the
Coastal Empire provides one
time financial crisis assis
tance, up to $3,000 per house
hold, for housing and utilities
including foreclosure,
demand for possession, dis-
possessory, eviction notice,
shut-off or past due notice for
utilities or utilities tumed-off.
The program will launch on
June 7, 2010 and run through
September 30, 2010.
The Georgia Fresh
Start program is led by the
Department of Fluman
Services (DHS) and United
Way of Metropolitan Atlanta,
in partnership with United
Way of the Coastal Empire
and the Salvation Army, and
is funded by the American
Recovery and Reinvestment
Act of 2009 (ARRA).
Fresh Start is a short
term, crisis-oriented benefit
that will provide a one-time
assistance payment for needy
families to get them caught up
on past due shelter and/or util
ity expenses, or assist them
with move-in costs associated
with renting a new dwelling.
Last year, more than
1.2 million families in
Georgia experienced financial
hardship, many having their
utilities interrupted or putting
them at risk for losing their
housing. In critical situations
like these, a little financial
assistance could make a big
difference. More importantly,
it could mean a fresh start for
a family in need.
To qualify for Fresh
Start, you must meet the fol
lowing criteria:

legal immigrant allowed to
work in the United States
Be a resident of the State of
Georgia
-Be a caretaker of a minor
dependent child living in the
home
-Have an income at or below
300% of the Federal Poverty
Level (FPL)
-Live at the address provided
on the Application for

2010, by calling United Way
at 2-1-1 or 912-651-7730.
