Fibromyalgia Is No Joke
Fibromyalgia is a com
mon diagnosis today which
encompasses many varied
symptoms. Some seemingly
unrelated, but common among
suffers. Some of the symptoms
go across body systems; and
includes joint stiffness, chronic
body pain, vision abnormalities,
chronic headache, sensitivity to
chemicals, muscle twitches,
generalized weakness, forgetful
ness, breathing troubles, weight
gain and loss, nausea, sleep
problems, fatigue, digestive
problems, depression and
moodiness, and so much more.
Years ago there was no
diagnosis for this array of ail
ments and doctors many times
named it malingering. However
as more and more folk began to
complain of this long list of
vague and seemingly unrelated
symptoms, it came to be called
fibromyalgia. Chronic sufferers
seemed to get no relief from
common OTC pain relievers
such as aspirin, acetaminophen,
and ibuprofen. But, found
lifestyle changes that included
attention to diet, exercise, and
nutritional supplementation,
much more beneficial.
A common dilemma in
persons who complain of this
varied array of symptoms, is one
of mal-absorption in the colon.
It appears that these persons are
often nutrient deprived due to
problems of the digestive sys
tem including stomach upsets,
parasites, irritable bowel, and
more. This creates a need for
colon cleansing to remove
mucus and other dried up waste
blocking the pathways to vital
nutrient absorption.

Many people also suffer
from food allergies, but, because
they want to eat ( and enjoy) the
foods anyway, they ignore or
medicate themselves against the
offending food’s distress. Food
allergies exacerbate health prob
lems and the discomfort they
cause. Because a food allergy
does not kill you immediately,
or send you to the emergency
room, does not mean it’s not
causing long-term harm.
If you feel bad after eating
or drinking something, stop eat
ing it. And not only that, if
you’ve had this habit, you are a
prime candidate for a de-toxing
regimen. Here are some tilings
you might consider changing if
you have fibromyalgia, or sus
pect you might: Chew your food
longer to stimulate enzymes for
better digestion. Don’t eat meat
and dairy in the same meal, and
don’t have fruits and sweets in
the same meal with animal pro
tein and animal fats. Eat only
when you are hungry. Sip water
with meals, but not much. It’s
better to drink liquids between
meals. Avoid packaged and
refined foods.
Pay special attention to
how you feel after eating, if you
find some food makes you feel
bad, in any way, remove it from
your diet for at least three
months. Drink at least 8 glasses
of pure water daily. Water helps
digestion, elimination, detoxifi
cation and cleansing. The essen
tial fatty acids are often deficient
in persons with fibromyalgia.
Good sources from foods
include mackerel, herring, sar
dines, salmon, olive oil, wal
nuts, pecans, cashews, almonds,
and avocados, eat plenty.
Eliminate nightshade
foods, which slow down colla
gen repair in the joints and pro
motes the inflammatory
process. Tomatoes, white pota
toes, eggplant, and peppers.
Also avoid sugar, wheat, dairy
products, fermented foods,
molds (cheese) and yeast. Yeast
can cause irritation in the intes
tines. And, rethink artificial
sweeteners and non-dairy
creamers. After cleaning up
your diet, give some thought to
creating a healthy balance in
your life overall. Learning to say
no, getting more rest time, play
time, ‘me’ time, to enjoy your
life. This too is necessary for
healing and stress management.

gia, we can help regain your

First Lady Launches President’s
Council on Fitness, Sports and
Nutrition
First Lady Michelle
Obama joined kids from the
Washington, DC area to
launch the President’s
Council on Fitness, Sports
and Nutrition and introduce
the 2010 Council co-chairs
and members.
In conjunction with the
First Lady’s Let’s Move! ini
tiative, this year President
Obama has broadened the
scope of the Council, for
merly known as the
President’s Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports,
to include a focus on healthy
eating as well as active
lifestyles. The President
recently signed an Executive
Order outlining the Council’s
new emphasis on both good
nutrition and physical fit
ness.
The President has
named Drew Brees, quarter
back for the New Orleans
Saints, and Dominique
Dawes, three-time Olympian
and former U.S. national
champion in women’s gym
nastics, 2010 Council Co-

remarks at the event and
Brees recorded a video mes
sage that was shown there.
Joining Dawes at the
event were 2010 Council
Members Dan Barber, Tedy
Bruschi, Allyson Felix,
Michelle Kwan, Curtis Pride,

Council Executive
Director, Shellie Pfohl, was
also in attendance.
Following the announce
ment, the First Lady, Pfohl
and the Council Members
joined the kids in participat
ing in a series of activity sta
tions.
“This year we’re
expanding the work of the
President’s Council on
Fitness, Sports and Nutrition
to include not just a focus on
active lifestyles, but on
healthy eating, too,” Mrs.
Obama said. “The Council
will play an important role in
our effort to help combat
childhood obesity in this
country and I am grateful to
the athletes, chefs, doctors
and nutrition experts who are
volunteering their time on
the Council to help make a
difference.”
The President’s
Council on Fitness, Sports
and Nutrition is a committee
of volunteer citizens who
advise the President through
the Secretary of Health and
Human Services about
opportunities to develop
accessible, affordable and
sustainable physical activity,
fitness, sports and nutrition
programs for all Americans
regardless of age, back
ground or ability.
The Council’s mission
is to engage, educate and
empower all Americans to
adopt a healthy lifestyle that
includes regular physical
activity and good nutrition.

Make Sure Children are Up-to-Date on
Immunizations before Attending
Summer Camp
School books have
been put away for a few
months and children in
Chatham County are looking
forward to the lazy days of
summer which could include
going to summer camps. But
before kids head out for sum
mer fun, parents are encour
aged to make sure that all
immunizations are up to
date.
“We want children to
enjoy a happy, healthy sum
mer and one way to ensure
that is to get them immu
nized against potentially
dangerous diseases,” said
Coastal Health District
Immunization Coordinator,
Marianne Pappas. “Whether
it's whooping cough or
H1N1 flu, children need to
be protected, especially
when they're going to be in
close contact with a lot of
their peers.”
The Chatham County
Health Department can help
parents determine if their
child's immunizations are
current. The Health
Department has vaccine
available for children who
need to be immunized.
“People don't usually
think about immunizing their
children this time of year but
it's a good idea because not
only will it help protect them
during summer break but it
also helps parents avoid the
back-to-school rush to get
children immunized in the
fall,” said Pappas.
Daycare and school-
aged children are required by
State law to get certain
immunizations before enter
ing school; however, vacci
nating young people against
additional diseases, such as
the H1N1 flu, is encouraged
by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, the
Georgia Department of
Community Health, and the
Coastal Health District.
