Gossett’s heart-to-heart talk was both encouraging and uplifting to those in atten dance. “My message is that there is no such thing as impossible,” he said. “It is up to us to keep the doors of opportunity open,” Gossett added. Gossett was referring to the importance of adults being mentors to the younger gener ation. “We must prepare them to go through doors of oppor tunity,” he declared. “If they don’t get the right stuff, then they will get the wrong stuff,” he noted. The Emmy Award win ning actor acknowledged the powerful influence of the film industry on people, especially the youth. “I see how children are influenced by movies,” Gossett said. “If we aren’t The National Association of Black Military Women will be hosting its 17th Biennial Reunion during the 18-22 August 2010 in historical city of Savannah. The National Association of Black Military Women (NABMW) is an association of women located throughout the coun try who are veterans or cur rent members of the United States Armed Forces. It was founded under the former name of "The Black WAAC, WAC, Women in Service" in 1976 and was later renamed the National Association of Black Military Women to include Black Military Women from all services of the US Armed Forces. The mission of NABMW is to seek out, record, maintain and tell the history and heritage of African-American Military Women who served and are serving in the United States careful, then movies can exploit them; too many want to become gang bangers,” he said. Gossett spoke about his life experiences during the years following the Great Depression. He said his gener ation grew up in nice neighbor hoods where everyone lived Armed Forces. Members consist of military women who served from WWII to current wars/conflicts. Yes African American females served in WWII. Gossett feels that the sense of community is not as evident and valued today as it once was. “We all came from that hodgepodge and that’s the way America should be today,” he commented. “Kids today are not being taught this, and it worries me,” he added. NABMW will be hon oring one of our own citizens during our reunion. The late WWII veteran Mrs Anne Knight Jordan. Jordan had a distinguished career. She organized local chapters of national associa tions, did substitute teaching, headed membership drives Gossett felt that service to others is the most important thing an individual can do in this life. He said it’s not how much you accumulate, but how much you give. He also talked about the need to overcome the pain of the past, to heal, and to forgive. for charitable causes, repre sented Chatham County at the Salk Institute in San Diego, CA and was President of the National Medical Auxiliary, Inc. Jordan attended a White House Conference on Health, Nutrition, and Food. She was a charter life member of the NABMW, served on the Organizational Structure Committee, and have been Chairperson of the Southeast Region. She was a dedicated and committed member of the association and strived to take and spread our message about the history of Black military women wherever and whenever she could. Two years ago when Savannah was selected as the next reunion site, Mrs. Jordan was very excited and could not wait to show off her city. Unfortunately, Mrs Jordan died in January of this year. Jordan was married to the late Dr. Carl Jordan who was one of our prominent surgeons and native of Savannah. The 5th Annual Awards Dinner Fundraiser and Graduation will be held Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) The Eden Rm, The Temple of Glory, 1105 Stiles Ave (cor ners of Gwinnett and Stiles).
