School Supply Drive to Benefit Spencer
Elementary School
With states and cities
cutting budgets more than
ever, public schools in
Savannah are facing a tough
year. And even in the best of
years, teachers spend hun
dreds of dollars out-of-pock
et on supplies for their class
room.
But teachers and stu
dents at Spencer Elementary
School will get a little more
help this year, thanks to a
school supply drive being
held by the Savannah cam
pus of University of
Phoenix.
During the month
of August, University of
Phoenix will be collecting
donations to benefit students
at the school. Residents are
encouraged to participate
and donate school supplies;
some of the items requested
by the school include
crayons, Elmer’s glue, hand
sanitizer, facial tissues,
loose-leaf notebook paper, 1-
inch binders and #2 pencils.
“Elementary schools
and teachers play such a vital
role in our community, but
too often don’t get the local
support they need,” said
Melissa Jackson, campus
director at University of
Phoenix - Savannah.
“University of Phoenix
is organizing this drive
because we understand that
every little bit can make a
difference.”
The school supply drive
is a precursor to the
University’s mentoring pro
gram that will kick off with
Spencer Elementary School
this September.
More than 25
University faculty and staff
members have committed to
visit the campus regularly to
mentor students in kinder
garten through grade five
with academic and other
challenges.
Residents who
would like to donate can do
so at University of Phoenix -
Savannah, 8001 Chatham
Center Drive.
The public can also call
the campus for more infor
mation at (912) 232.0531.
On Tues, Aug 3rd, the
Edgemere/Sackville
Neighborhood Association
hosted their national night
out at the location of Dr.
Ronald Dandy, Optometrist
3709 Waters Ave.
In cooperation with the
local police force we
encourage residents to
watch out for their neigh
bors and call in crimes when
they see them happening.
We were excited that
over 100 families of our
community came out to
become re acquainted and to
establish neighborhood
friendships.
Residents enjoyed free
hotdogs, sodas, water, give
aways and other treats from
local businesses.
Planned activities for
children were enjoyed.
