Ports Authority’s Foltz Delivers
State of the Ports Address
Nearly 1,200 business
leaders attended Georgia
Ports Authority Executive
Director Curtis J. Foltz's
State of the Port Address at
the Savannah International
Trade and Convention
Center. Foltz applauded the
Port of Savannah's remark
able recovery during fiscal
year 2009-2010.
He also warned that the
Savannah Harbor "must be
prepared for the demands of
global shipping" once the
Panama Canal Expansion is
completed in 2014.
“With larger vessels
already calling on the Port of
Savannah, it is imperative
that the Savannah Harbor
Expansion Project (SHEP) is
approved and remains on
schedule."
The single most impor
tant factor for the Port of
Savannah’s future success
remains the completion of
the SHEP. The work to deep
en the Savannah Harbor up
to 48 feet at mean low water
is precisely the type of effort
that will bring comprehen
sive economic recovery for
the United States.
During the event, cen
tenarian Mr. Paul Williams
was honored for his years of
service as a longshoreman.

shore women.

Honors

Special to the NNPA
WASHINGTON —
Members of Congress, Civil
Rights legends, leaders of state
and municipal governments
from all across the U.S. and
corporate America provided
conclusive evidence it is
impossible to have a conversa
tion about “Power in
Leadership” without including
the National Newspaper
Publishers Association
(NNPA) — the Black Press of
America.
Congressional Black
Caucus Chair Barbara Lee (D-
CA), Sen. Roland Burris (D-
II), and the Rev. A1 Sharpton,
President of the National
Action Network, all joined the
NNPA in saluting honorees
Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-
TX) and Lacy Clay (D-MO),
the Rev. Jesse Jackson of the
National Rainbow Coalition,
and National Urban League
President Marc Morial.
Rep. Lee and Marc H.
Morial, the National Urban
League's President and Chief
Executive Officer, both
recalled their first published
critiques were in their local
Black newspapers. Rep.
Lee’s critique was published
long before she was a member
of Congress. Marc Morial
was published under an
assumed name because he was
a 15 year old high school foot
ball player writing about issues
faced by high school athletes.
Morial told the crowd,
“While some have questioned
the need for the Congressional
Black Caucus, the National
Urban League, and the
National Action Network, let
me say we are here to stay.”
“We need a new
activism, they may call it a new
Tea Party, but I see old James
Crow and Larry Crow," Morial
continued, referring to the
modem expressions of Jim
Crow segregation. “We need to
re-invigorate our institutions.
But make no mistake. We are
here to stay.”
