This year’s event featured Strings of the South, a special ly formed string ensemble under the direction of local tal ent Eddie Wilson. This year’s picnic theme was “Pinknic in the Park,” in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Picnickers were encouraged to make cre ative use of the color pink when planning their picnics. This was the first Picnic in the Park to utilize Forsyth Park’s new outdoor performance stage and bandshell. To mark the occasion, musician Eddie Wilson assembled a lush, 12-piece string section combined with a rhythm section, piano and well-known local vocalists Fluxsie Scott & Trae Gurley into an ensemble called Strings of the South. Picnic in the Park was made possible by the City of Savannah and WSAV- 3. This year’s picnic contest was host ed by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Haitian Monument Gala to be Held October 9 The Haitian Monument T he Haitian American Historical Society announces the 3rd Anniversary Celebration of the Haitian Memorial Monument in Franklin Square in downtown Savannah, honoring the vol unteer soldiers from Haiti who fought in Revolutionary War Battle of Savannah in October, 1779. This formal gala fundraising event will take place at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, 460 Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, from 7-11pm on Saturday, Oct. 9th, 2010. The monument repre sents the Chasseurs- Volontaires de Saint- Domingue, a regiment of soldiers who formed one- tenth of the allied army before Savannah in the fall of 1779. The unit was comprised of over 500 free men of color from the Island of Haiti and was the largest unit of men of African descent to fight in the American Revolution.
