Savannah Celebrates the
Greatest Generation
Jimmy Ray and Bill Quinan of the Veterans Council of Chatham County stand beside the WWII
Veterans Monument as it is being set at its permanent location on River St. Both have been part of
a team of fundraisers to make this dream a reality. "Today is a great day" they both said.
Construction for the WWII
Veterans Memorial is under
way!
Conceptualized and
designed by Savannah's own
Eric Meyerhoff, this memo
rial is a visible symbol of a
nation's gratitude for extraor
dinary acts of courage and
selflessness and represents
the culmination of years of
planning and private com
munity fund-raising. The
memorial will be unveiled at
the "Celebration of the
Greatest Generation," a sen
timental yet poignant event
held on Saturday evening,
November 6th at 5:30 p.m. in
the beautiful Harborside
Room of the Savannah Hyatt
Regency Hotel, directly
adjacent tothe memorial
itself.
Continuing in celebra
tory fashion throughout the
weekend, the Veterans
Council of Chatham County
is proud to announce that the
long-awaited memorial will
be dedicated at a formal cer
emony on Sunday afternoon,
November 7th at 3:00 p.m.
on historic River Street at the
Whitaker Street ramp direct
ly in front of the Bohemian
Hotel Savannah Riverfront
on the west side of the Hyatt
Regency Hotel.
Prominently displayed
on the picturesque water
front of our seaport city, the
memorial is a visual repre
sentation of our theme "A
World Apart." Standing 20
feet high, a steel globe clad
with copper is overlaid with
bronze land masses and
islands. The globe is divided
into two parts, representing
the Eastern/European
Theater and the
Western/Pacific Theater. A
walk-through between the
two parts will display the
names of the local men and
women whose lives were
lost in World War II.
The Dedication
Ceremony on Sunday,
November 7th at 3:00 p.m. is
free and open to the public.

Jack and Jill of America,
Inc. Savannah Chapter is cele
brating fifty years of service to
the Savannah community.
The late Mattie M. Leftwich
envisioned an organization
that focused on the family, and
sought for all children rich cul
tural experiences that would
enhance both the physical and
mental growth of the child.
Thus, in October 1960, Mrs.
Leftwich and twenty-nine
ladies began efforts to form
the Savannah Chapter of Jack
and Jill of America, Inc.
The Chapter was
installed by Mrs. Thelma
Keck in October 1960 and
sponsored by the Charlotte,
N.C. Chapter. The Savannah
Chapter elected Mrs. Leftwich
as its first president.
