Moderate Voter Turnout in
Chatham County
Voters casting ballots at the May Street YMCA
Voter turnout was mod
erate, but better than origi
nally anticipated Tuesday
morning as residents got out
to exercise their civic duty.
Primary elections are usually
not as popular as general
elections, but concerned citi
zens wanted to ensure they
were counted.
Important positions up
for grabs include Governor,
Lieutenant Governor,
Secretary of State, Attorney
General, Labor
Commissioner, State Senate
and Congressional seats
among others.
Many local and state
residents took advantage of
early voting which began on
September 20. More than
three-quarter million early
ballots were cast through
Friday, according to the
Georgia Secretary of State’s
elections division. Total
ballots cast were 761,042
with 643,936 voted in per
son, 117,106 mail-in ballots
and 58,606 mail-in ballots
outstanding.
To ensure fair treatment
occurs at the polls, the
Justice Department has
placed monitors at polls in
various states including
Georgia. According to a
Justice Department release,
the poll monitors will,
among other tasks, "gather
information on whether vot
ers are subject to different
voting qualifications or pro
cedures on the basis of race,
color, or membership in a
language minority group."
No doubt, we will all be
glued to our televisions to
see the outcome of these
close and hard fought races.
Old Savannah City Mission Prepares
for Annual Day of Great Thanksgiving
Members of the community enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal during last year’s Day of Great Thanksgiving
Many people would
characterize our times as try
ing. However, many more
would describe them as a cri
sis. Last year was tough. This
year is tougher. And, there is
no end in sight. People who
never dreamed of seeking help
from a Rescue Mission are
finding their way through the
doors of the Old Savannah
City Mission.
Last year generous
donors made it possible for the
Mission to provide 6,248 deli
cious smoked turkey dinners in
Forsyth Park. This year we
must to do more. We are join
ing with new friends so we will
make a difference through
Statesboro's First Day of Great
Thanksgiving. The hungry
will be fed as we come togeth
er for UNITY IN THE COM
MUNITY. God is pleased
when we demonstrate His love
for those who are hungry and
hurting. We are counting on
the prayers and assistance of
hundreds of volunteers and
many generous donors. We can
bring new hope and faith into
the lives of our friends and
neighbors who are hurting.
