Ralph Abernathy, III speaks as members on the platform look on. Servant Emannuel Branch The GA Coastal SCLC Chapter in Savannah hosted their Third Annual SCLC Drum Major Awards Dinner on March 9, 2011 at the Quality Inn. Presenting the awards was Carl Gilliard, President of the Savannah SCLC Chapter. The keynote address was delivered by Rev. Ralph Abernathy III, the son of Civil Rights leg end and best friend to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr— Ralph Abernathy. Rev. Abernathy III message included critical events of our journey from 400 years of slavery to racial segregation to our present move toward economic development and empower ment as a people. After a very powerful and moving speech by Rev. Abernathy III several deserving honorees were awarded the following SCLC Drum Major Awards—awards that were long overdue: -Ms. Mama T was honored not only for her famous cooking but also for her years of community service -Mr. Gator Rivers was hon ored with the SCLC Lifetime Sports Legacy Award -Mr. Samuel Stewart was honored with the SCLC Lifetime Sports Legacy Award for his incredible baseball record spanning since the 1950’s -Mr. & Mrs. James Hudson was honored with the Martin and Coretta Award for their life long community service and activism -Mr. Eddie L. Warren was honored with the MLK Legacy Award -Mr. Grover Thornton was hon ored with the Rev. Hosea Williams Award -Chaplain Nathaniel Hester was honored with The MLK Leadership Award -Elder Walter Stewart was hon ored with the SCLC Pioneer Award -Mr. Jerome Hayes was honored with the Organization of The Year Award -Elder Nathaniel Neal was hon ored with the ML King Drum Major Award -Chaplain Nathaniel Nelson was honored with the SCLC Legacy Award -Pastor Bernard Clarke was hon ored with the Pastor of The Year Award Rev. Mitchell. This is the third time that Lady Mitchell has received this honor. She was selected as the Top Lady of the Year in 2006 and 2009. Lady Annette was inducted into the Savannah Chapter in September, 1996 and has served the local chap ter and area faithfully in many capacities. These include Chairperson for Community Beautification, Corresponding Secretary, 2nd Vice President, 1 st Vice President, 2006 Area IV Leadership Conference Registration Chairperson, Area IV Community Partnership Chairperson, Area IV Political Action Chairperson, and Chairperson of Registration for the 2006 National Convention held in Savannah, Georgia. Currently Lady Mitchell serves as President of the Local TLOD Chapter and Recording Secretary for Area IV. Lady Annette is married to Lord Abraham Mitchell, Sr. and is the proud mother of two adult children, Alana Dawson and Abraham, Jr. She has two granddaughters and is a retired educator of the Savannah- Lady Annette Mitchell Chatham County Public School System after serving for 34 years. Lady Annette is a life long member of the Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church where she works with the Mission and Floral Ministries and the History Committee. She is a of mem ber Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the Electa Chapter of the Order of Eastern Stars, National Council of Negro Women, American Business Women Association, Chatham Retired Educators Association (CREA), Georgia Retired Association of Educators (GREA), The Savannah Branch of NAACP and Volunteer for Hospice Savannah. Lady Annette had the distinction of being name Top Lady of the Year for 2006 and 2009 in the Area IV competi tion.
