Founded in 2009, Hair Extravaganza, Inc.'s mission is to inspire, motivate and unite professional stylists and barbers to empower youth and address issues that affect at-risk youth in the Coastal Empire. To learn how you can join this organization, go to www.hairextravaganza.info. Jerome Green and Sherrod Hall graduated on April 8 as part of the 56th Starfish Culinary Arts Training Program Class. This landmark pro gram, spearheaded by Union Mission under the leadership of Chef Paul Buck, teaches culinary skills to local residents in need of job training. At the graduation cere mony, Sherrod Hall shared his memories of what an impact his family had made on his life and how grateful he was for the guidance of the Starfish team as he learned the skills that will provide for him and his family in the future. Jerome Green, a talent ed singer, performed an a cappella rendition of the song "I Found A Friend" by Lee Williams. Both men plan to use their newfound abilities to gain employment in the Savannah area and hope to open their own restaurants someday. This 14 week training program offers participants, culinary techniques, theory, basic ServSafe certifica tion, life skills training and hands-on work experience through the operation of the Starfish Cafe. Job place ment assistance is then pro vided to support each grad uate as they take the next step. The Starfish Cafe (located at 719 E. Johnson High School Named 2011 Jefferson Awards Winner The Jefferson Awards for Public Service is proud to announce that Sol C Johnson High School, from Savannah GA, gave a compelling presen tation of their Students in Action (SIA) activities during the 2011 Savannah Regional Competition on April 14. Before an audience of their Savannah peers, including A. E. Beach High School, Islands High School, Jenkins High School, Savannah Arts Academy, and Savannah High School, the students of Johnson’s SIA team earned the Jefferson Awards Gold Leadership Banner and will represent the Savannah Region at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremonies in Washington, DC June 19 through 22 as the Savannah Regional Recipient for Outstanding Service by a High School. As regional recipient, Johnson’s student leadership team will spend four days in Washington DC celebrating service with over 500 Jefferson Awards recipients from across the country. The students of Johnson High School will col laborate with other schools from the SIA program and complete a service project in the DC area while spending time visiting with America’s leaders on Capitol Hill. The Jefferson Awards Students in Action program is currently operating in over 250 high schools nationwide in eleven regions. At the Jefferson Awards Ceremony in D.C., Sol C. Johnson High School will be one of eleven high schools competing for the title of National Recipient for Outstanding Service by a High School. Each regional high school, along with the national honoree, will be showcased as part of the Jefferson Awards Ceremonies.
