to Address SCAD Graduates

Goldberg will address the
Savannah College of Art
and Design graduating class
of 2011 at commencement
ceremonies in Savannah and
Atlanta, Saturday, June 4.
Goldberg will speak to
graduates at SCAD’s 31st
Savannah commencement
ceremony, 9 a.m., at the
Savannah Civic Center, 301
W. Oglethorpe Ave. She will
then address the graduates
at SCAD Atlanta’s fifth
commencement ceremony,
6 p.m., at the Georgia World
Congress Center, 285

Born and raised in
New York City, Goldberg
worked in theatre and
improvisation in San Diego
and the Bay Area, where she
performed with the Blake
Street Hawkeyes theatre
troupe.
It was there that she
created the characters which
became “The Spook Show”
and evolved into her hit
Broadway show, Grammy
Award-winning album and
the HBO special that helped
launch her career.
Goldberg made her
motion picture debut in
Steven Spielberg’s film ver
sion of Alice Walker’s “The
Color Purple,” for which
she earned an Academy
Award nomination and a
Golden Globe Award. Her
performance in “Ghost”
earned her the Academy
Award and a Golden Globe
Award for Best Supporting
Actress.
Among her many awards
and honors, Goldberg has
placed prints of her hands,
feet and braids in the fore
court of the famed
Grauman’s Chinese Theatre
and received her star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame in
front of the Kodak Theatre.

Applications for the
2011-2012 Leadership
Savannah Class are online
now. This will be a one year
class and will be limited to
42 people. The Selections
Committee is seeking repre
sentation from a cross-sec
tion of the community.
These leaders and
potential leaders should be
active in business, education,
the arts, religion, govern
ment, community-based
organizations, and ethnic and
minority groups and will
reflect the diversity of the
community. Applicants must
have the Ml support of the
organization or corporation
they represent.
Sessions are expected
to begin in September 2011
and conclude in June of
2012. Applicants will be
expected to attend all of the
sessions in order to graduate.
All applicants must go
through selections, and Ml
program fees will be $2,500,
with a limited number of
$1,000 scholarships avail
able based on need. To apply

reinstatement of the Youth
Council. The president of
the local chapter Mr. A1
Scott has named Rev. James
C. Jones as the Youth
Works Committee chair.
We are seeking new
youth members to assist in
this process. Being in the
new era of technology, we
are ready for an innovative
approach to strengthen our
young people here in
Savannah, Georgia.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011
with a luncheon for key com
munity and business leaders at
45 Bistro.
The Annual Awards Gala
is scheduled for September 24,
2011 at the Savannah Hyatt
Regency. Cathy P. Hill,

the Honorary Chairman for
this year.

recognizing persons who have
been consistently noteworthy
in their work to improve their
surroundings in one of several
areas: Historic Preservation,
Fine Arts, Public Service, and
Education. The W.W. Law
Legacy award is also given to
persons who embody Mr.
Law’s selfless dedication and
commitment to this communi
ty. The recipients for 2011 are:
