Kachmar Sworn In as 4th District
School Board Representative

In a scheduled Oath of
Office Ceremony the newly
appointed school Board
member, Shawn A. Kachmar,
was officially sworn in to
serve as the District 4
Representative of the
Savannah-Chatham County
Board of Public Education.
The event was held on
Friday, August 26th at the
District’s Central office.
In front of an audience
that comprised of school
Board members, community
members, and District offi
cials, the former District 4
Board member. Judge
Gregory V. Sapp, was on
hand to perform the Oath of
Office Ceremony.
Mr. Kachmar, who has
long been active in the
Savannah community partic
ularly in the area of educa
tion, also serves on the Board
of Directors for the School
District's Education for
A.L.L. Foundation, and is the
Chairman of the Board and a
classroom volunteer for
Junior Achievement.
He is active in the PTA
where his children attended
school and served as the
elected parent representative
on the School Council.
Mr. Kachmar is an
attorney at Hunter, Maclean,
Exley & Dunn, where he cur
rently serves as the firm’s
Business Litigation Practice
Group Leader.
Another vacancy has
presented itself on the School
Board.
The Savannah-Chatham
County Board of Public
Education is seeking to fill
the seat left open by the res
ignation of Mr. Floyd Adams.

Stanley Jennings scored on a
12 yard run with 19 seconds
left to lift Albany State to a 37-
34 win over Savannah State in
the Music City Classic played
in Macon's Henderson
Stadium, the crowd of 7,105
saw ASU take a 19-0 lead
before the Tigers prevented the
shutout when Derek Williams
kicked a 52 yard field goal in
the second quarter. A 26 yard
field goal by Williams cut
SSU's deficit to 19-6 but a field
goal by the Rams extended
Albany's lead to 22-6. SSU
would score the next three
touchdowns to take a 27-22
lead early in the fourth quarter.
ASU (1-0) went ahead 30-27
with 1:20 left following a
Tigers fumble. SSU (0-1)
regained the lead with 51 sec
onds left when Dylan Cook
caught a 25 yard touchdown
pass. Albany's game winning
drive took 63 yards on five
plays and only 26 seconds. AJ
DeFilippis passed for 315 yards
and three touchdowns while
Brain Lackey caught three
passes for 115 yards and a
touchdown. Justin Babb ran for
37 yards and caught a touch
down pass while Nate Clay had
18 tackles. Jennings, a 235-lb.
quarterback threw for 240
yards and two scores while
Darryl Carey, a 230-lb. running
back had 51 yards. Both teams
had 382 yards of offense.

Dr. E. N. Bunn. Mrs. Steele
marched with the congregation
to the dedication and opening
of the Bunn Memorial Baptist
Church. At Bunn, she has
served as the pianist, a Sunday
school teacher, Chairman of
the Trustee Board, and a mem
ber of several other boards.
Having been recognized for 50
years of service, the Bunn
Memorial Baptist Church
Annex was built and named
the “Sadie Davis Steele
Annex” in her honor. She is
still active at her church after

before a crowd of 15,912.
Despite the loss, SE
Louisiana had 419 yards of
offense and were led by
Brian Young who passed for
249 yards. Zeke Jones ran for
two touchdowns and
Brandon Collins caught nine
passes for 94 yards for the
Lions (0-1). Griffin passed
for 267 yards for the
Greenwave (1-0).
SSU Cross
Country Opens
Season With Win
Savannah State began their
2011 cross country season
with a bang. The SSU men
won the Jacksonville Duals
while the SSU women
placed second. The men
defeated Jacksonville,
Stetson and Bethune-
Cookman while the women
defeated Stetson and
Bethune-Cookman but lost
to Jacksonville. Ruben
Isreal-McBee led the SSU
men with a time of 16:42 and
finished second overall while
Dominique Givance was 11th
overall with a time of 14:23.04
for the SSU women.

Austin Trainer threw a 68 yard
touchdown pass to Lenworth
Lennon with 39 seconds left to
give Florida A&M a 28-22
win over Fort Valley State at
Bragg Stadium. FVSU was
down 21-12 at the half but ral
lied to take a 22-21 lead in the
fourth quarter.
DESPITE LOSS,
TIGERS SHOW
PROMISE
After being down 19-0, the
Savannah State football team
bounced back to take a 27-22
lead over Albany State, early
in the fourth quarter. In the
end, the Tigers lost by three
points but showed promise. At
the end of the day, several SSU
players had outstanding
efforts. Derek Williams kicked
a 52-yard field goal which
broke the school record of 51
yards set by Calvin Tucker in
1986; AJ DeFilippis passed for
315 yards and threw touch
down passes of 5, 64 and 25
yards after finishing last sea
son with 457 yards and 2
touchdowns; Brain Lackey
caught 3 passes for 115 yards
and a touchdowns after 335
yards last year; and linebacker
Nate Clay had 18 tackles after
only getting 27 last year.
