The Savannah Jazz Festival, celebrating jazz as a living art form-built on a constantly evolving tradition will offer all types of jazz, from Dixieland, traditional swing, straight-ahead and bop to melodic standards, and funky down-home gut- bucket blues. The festival boasts the best in international, nation al, regional and local jazz talent. Sponsored by the City of Savannah, the Festival is free and open to the public. United Way Sets a Campaign Goal of $8,255,555 L-R: Past United Way Chair, Bert Tenebaum, Dave Paddison, Anthony Marsella, 2011 United Way Chair Michael Traynor United Way of the Coastal Empire has announced its goal for the 2011 community campaign at the Kick-Off event held at the Savannah Civic Center on Thursday, September 8, with approximately 1,000 people in attendance to help mark the occasion. The organization has set an ambitious target of $8,255,555 up $255,555 from last year. Funds raised from the annual Campaign help sup port over 120 human service programs that improve the lives of people in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties. Priority funding goes to successful programs in the issue areas of Education and Youth Development, Health and Wellness, Economic Independence and Basic Human Needs. “The Coastal Empire area is an immensely gener ous community and is made up of individuals and organi zations with the inspiration to do something for others," said 2011 United Way Campaign Chair Michael C. Traynor, publisher of the Savannah Morning News. "We are moving confidently toward the 2011 campaign season knowing that area companies and citizens will once again generously step forward to help improves the lives of their families, friends and neighbors through their gifts to United Way of the Coastal Empire." Recognized at the Kick-Off were volunteers See United Way, pg. 11 Boys & Girls Club Founder Elected to Hall of Fame Frank Frank Callen, founder of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Empire, the first Boys & Girls Club in Georgia, has been elected for induction to the 2011 Georgia Boys & Girls Clubs Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Georgia Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame is to celebrate the extraordinary youth, men and women who have made signif icant contributions to the Boys & Girls Club Movement in Georgia. Like Mr. Callen, a pio neer himself, each inductee has helped raise the standards and level of professionalism in the Boys & Girls Club Movement, while inspiring and mentoring future genera tions, laying the groundwork that encourages us all to strive for excellence in helping chil dren who need us most. United House of Prayer For All People to Celebrate 85th Annual Holy Convocation The United House of Prayer for All People of the Church on the Rock of the Apostolic Faith, will cele brate its 85th Annual Holy Convocation in Savannah, Ga., September 18th through 25th 2011. The week long celebra tion will include musical pro grams and the preaching of God’s Word nightly. Services will begin at 7:30 p.m. The celebration will welcome the organization’s Leader and Spiritual Advisor, Bishop C.M. Bailey, Friday, September 23rd through Sunday, September 25th. The celebration will culmi nate on Sunday, with bap tismal services at 10 a.m., the Annual Grace American Peace Parade at 2 p.m., and close out services Sunday evening.
