Atlanta Honors Xernona Clayton
With a Street and Park Plaza
Designation

Atlanta City Council, Lt.
Governor Casey Cagle, and
hundreds of other communi
ty and civic leaders on
Tuesday, September 20, in
recognizing the contributions
of civil rights activist and
broadcasting pioneer
Xernona Clayton.
Ms. Clayton was recog
nized for a lifetime of contri
butions to community and
humanity with the dedication
of an honorary street and
park plaza. Baker Street,
N.W. between Piedmont
Avenue, N.W. and
Centennial Olympic Park
Drive, N.W., was named
Xernona Clayton Way; and
the plaza at Hardy Ivy Park
Ambassador Andrew Young
was named Xernona Clayton
Plaza.
Members of the Atlanta
City Council, upon the rec
ommendation of a city com
mission and countless resi
dents and community lead
ers, approved the designation
of these landmarks to honor
Ms. Clayton’s invaluable
service to the community.
“I am extremely hon
ored by this gesture from the
Mayor and the City Council
(city of Atlanta). To have a
street and a park dedicated in
my name give me joy
beyond expression. This is a
significant moment for me
and I am delighted with this
signal honor,” said Ms.
Clayton.
The honorary street
sign unveiling at the intersec
tion of Baker and Peachtree
Streets was followed by the
dedication of the Xernona
Clayton Plaza, where offi
cials unveiled a plaque com
memorating Ms. Clayton’s
lasting legacy in civil rights
and broadcast journalism.
Ms. Clayton is only the
second woman and the first
African-American woman to
have a downtown street
named after her, following
legendary author Margaret
Mitchell.
A native of
Muskogee, OK, Ms. Clayton
began her career in Chicago
working for the Urban
League as an undercover

top guy! I presented my business plan, my credit report
and a small CD as collateral. Mr. James said,
"Welcome to Carver State Bank!" Carver State contin
ues its mission as a neighborhood financial partner to all
segments of our community, I remain a customer. Why
in the world would I change?

the community, local, state
and national leadership came
out to pay homage to the Rev.
Carl W. Scott Gilliard.
The event started with a
procession of leadership with
the theme trumpeted by the
movie theme "Coming to
America".
The packed house of
family and community
echoed the speaker WSOK's
own Mayor of the Gospel
Community Mr. E. Larry
McDuffie that Rev. Gilliard
was the ambassador of Love
and the little Moses of this
modem time.
