vance of Dr. Martin L.
King Jr.’s birthday on
Wednesday, January 11,
2012 noon at the Jewish
Educational Alliance, 5111
Abercorn Street,
Savannah, GA.
Honorees for 2012
will be retired physician
Dr. Wesley J. Ball and
Judge Charles Mikell. Dr.
Wesley J. Ball epitomizes
the concept of the good
physician, devoted to the
alleviation of human suf
fering and committed to
the healing arts and sci
ences. He earned the bac
calaureate degree from
Morehouse College and the
M.S. degree from Atlanta
University. He studied
medicine at Meharry
Medical College, from
which he received the
M.D. degree. His rotating
internship at Trumhull
Memorial Hospital in
Warren, Ohio, was fol
lowed by a general surgery
Judge Charles Mikell
residency at the Horner G.
Phillips Hospital in St.
Louis, Missouri.
In 1964, Dr. Ball
came to Savannah, where
he has practiced surgery
for thirty-three years. He
has been on the active
medical staffs of Candler,
St. Joseph's Hospital, and
Memorial Medical Center.
In 1992, he was
awarded the Association's
Gold Medal for
Distinguished Service.
Dr. Ball is currently
chairman of the board of
directors of the EOA.
Judge Charles Mikell is
a native Savannahian.
He is an honors graduate
of the University of
Georgia Law School,
where he was a senior
editor of the law review
and a member of the
order of the coif. After
law school, he was a trial
lawyer in Chatham
County before being
appointed a state court
judge by Governor Joe
Frank Harris in 1985. He

Leaders Honored at Civil Rights
Walk of Fame Ceremony
Footsteps of nine new
revered civil rights icons
will be added to the
International Civil Rights
Walk of Fame during the
2012 Trumpet Awards
events. This induction cere
mony is scheduled for
Friday, January 6, 2012 at
10:00 a.m. at the Martin
Luther King, Jr. National
Historic Site, National Park
Service, located at 450
Auburn Avenue (Atlanta,
GA). The program preced
ing the induction ceremony
will be held at the Ebenezer
Baptist Church. The pro
gram and unveiling of the
footsteps are free and open
to the public.
The 2012 honorees in
this distinguished group
include Rev. Willie Bolden
& JT Johnson and the Civil
Rights Foot Soldiers, Rev.
Dr. E.T. Caviness, Dosan
Ahn Chang Ho, Constance
W. Curry, Attorney Fred D.
Gray, Rev. Theodore M.
Rev. Willie Bolden
Hesburgh, Charles J.
Ogletree, Jr. and Dr. Walter
F. Young.
The International Civil
Rights Walk of Fame was
created in 2004 to give
recognition to the foot sol
diers of justice who sacri
ficed and struggled to make
equality a reality for all.
This extraordinary display
has become one of the most
visited tourist attractions in
the city of Atlanta and has
enriched the heritage of the
civil rights movement. The
shoes used to create the foot
steps will also be on display
during the unveiling pro
gram.
The International Civil
Rights Walk of Fame, now
in its ninth year, is sponsored
by the Trumpet Awards
Foundation, Inc., and was
created and designed by
Xernona Clayton, founder
and executive producer of
the legendary Trumpet
Awards. Ms. Clayton states,
“This walk of fame tells a
phenomenal story about the
legacy of this nation. It is a
permanent testimony to
those who have dedicated
themselves to progress of
our people and to this
nation.. The roll of hon
orees is growing every year
with the addition of other
footsteps into the
International Civil Rights
Walk of Fame. “We will
continue to build upon this
commemorative memorial
to the civil rights struggle
that depicts the tireless
efforts and passionate con
cern of these determined
individuals, whose footsteps
appear in this Walk of
Fame,” said Ms. Clayton.

Lectures and exhibitions presented by the Savannah College
of Art and Design Feb 1, 7 p.m.Dr. Walter O. Evans Presents:
Lecture, Book-signing for The Walter O. Evans Collection of
African American Art, and Personal Tour of the “Dr. Walter
O. Evans Collection”
One of the foremost collectors of African American art in the
world, Dr. Walter Evans shares insights into his collection
that spans 150 years of African American art—from 19th-
century landscape paintings of the Hudson River School to
works by masters of the Harlem Renaissance, as well as later
20th-century works by Jacob Lawrence and Romare
Bearden, among others. Following a presentation by Dr.
Evans, guests can enjoy viewing a selection of more than 35
works from the Evans Collection which are currently exhib
ited at the SCAD Museum of Art. Walter O. Evans Center for

Exhibition by Fred Wilson
Fred Wilson is an internationally recognized conceptual visu
al artist best known for rearranging museum art objects and
collections using the same design techniques museums use,
but coming up with unusual displays to portray the under-rep
resented perspectives of people of color. Wilson will present
an artistic intervention into the Walter O. Evans Collection of
African American Art at the SCAD Museum of Art. SCAD
