Rev. Dwight Graves, President of the
Southern Leadership Conference
Passes
A great American has
passed from the scene:
Reverend Dwight Graves,
Cobb County President of
the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference
(SCLC). Rev Graves passed
away at Kennestone Hospital
in Kennesaw, GA yesterday.
He was a retired veteran and
Master Sergeant of the
United States Air Force. He
served with the NAACP for
years prior to coming to
SCLC. He also was a postal
worker and advocated for the
workers in the postal service
as a union steward. He
played football at Bluefield
State College and loved the
game. He graduated from
International Theological
Center (ITC) with a Masters
Degree in Divinity in the
‘80s. Rev. Dwight Graves
was the senior Pastor of the
Emmanuel Tabernacle
Church in Kennesaw with
his college sweetheart and
wife Cheryl, who was by his
side to the very end.
Reverend Graves was a
founder of the Georgia
Chapter of the SCLC and
Rev. Dwight Graves
served as Secretary for sev
eral years. His SCLC
Chapter was the Chapter of
the Year in 2008, as he
solved a national issue in
Cobb County regarding the
t-shirt being sold comparing
President Obama to a mon
key (Curious George). He
was a friend to those who
were in jail, often visiting
with inmates there. He was a
friend of school children,
advocating for them when
they had no one, and he was
a friend in courts, often inter
ceding for those who could
not afford a lawyer. He was a
preacher and pastor known
to find housing for his mem
bers.
Being a West Virginia
native he liked to fish and
enjoy the tranquility of the
outdoors. We shared much in
common and talked every
day. Dwight Graves was a
man’s man. He walked and
stood as a strong man. All
who met him were greeted
and galvanized by his boom
ing voice. We also knew him
as a writer whose opinions
were often editorialized in
the Cobb papers. He was
articulate and informed,
known to play up his West
Virginia roots, as he sized up
those who came into his
presence. Having worked
with NS A, Rev. Graves was
known to have interacted
with high level officials all
over the world. He had
knowledge of several lan
guages and led SCLC
Georgia’s international ini
tiative. This international
effort culminated in the
MLK Holiday celebration
where fourteen countries
participated in the Cobb
Chapter celebration.
