Chatham County Friday,
February 3 at the IL A building
located at 221 E. Lathrop Ave.
Jones is a Democrat, and ran
for Sheriff on the Democratic
ticket in 2008.
Jones is a Savannah
native and veteran law
enforcement officer who hails
from a public service family.
Jones has more than three
decades of service with the
International Paper Company.
He began his law enforcement
career after watching the
example of family members.
Concerned by rising crime
rates, lack of attention directed
toward young people, Jones
was determined to make a dif
ference. Jones realizes that the
office of Sheriff of Chatham
County is the key to turning
this problem around.

Five Men on a Stool to Perform at
Grand Festival Day

The Savannah Civic
Center is the high
light of the annual Savannah
Black Heritage Festival.
Grand Festival Day includes
an array of family-oriented
activities, concluding with a
star-studded concert. Five
Men On A Stool, scheduled
to perform Saturday Feb. 11,
2012 at 8 p.m., is a contem
porary R-n-B/Jazz ensemble
accompanied by a touch of
the spoken word. The group
consists of some tremen
dously talented individuals
with an All-Star rhythm sec
tion. Their combination
results in an unforgettably
unique blend of music and
poetry unrivaled in today’s
music scene.
Their performances
serve not only as entertain
ment, they also leave the
audience inspired and
enlightened about the com
munity and the world. Their
loyal following grows larger
with each performance and
they continue to leave an
indelible mark on each per
son that experiences the
wonder of Five Men On a
Stool. This Atlanta based
phenomenon is sweeping the
southeast with its captivating
yet indescribable perform
ances. Neo-soul artist Dwele
is set to perform before Five
Men on a Stool at 7 p.m.
Local acts such as Nickel
Bag of Funk and RJ and the
Upbeats will also be per
forming.
On Sunday, February
12 at 5p.m Annual Gospel
Concert featuring Lucinda
Moore of “Blessed, Broken
and Given” acclaim will be
performing. The concert
will be marked by opening
performances by local artists
and the SSU Wesleyan
Gospel Choir, the AASU
Gospel Choir, and St. John
Baptist Church Choir. The
concert is presented in part
by Joy 100 FM Radio and
LifeLink of Georgia.
The program will be
held at St. John Baptist

Avery Brooks to Portray Ira Aldridge, 19th Century
Shakespearean Actor
The life of celebrated
19th century Shakespearean
actor Ira Aldridge will be
highlighted in an original
theatrical production featur
ing Avery Brooks, acclaimed
21st century Shakespearean
actor, as Ira Aldridge: The
African Roscius, at 7 p.m.,
Feb. 18, at the Armstrong
Atlantic State University
Fine Arts Center, located
11935 Abercom St. The per
formance is free and open to
the public. The play exam
ines the life of an African
American who was forced to
emigrate to Europe in the
early 1800s in order to prac
tice his craft and who,
despite the odds, transcended
as an artist to the heights of
his chosen profession.
Aldridge performed
abroad for 43 years, winning
more awards, honors and
official decorations than any
of his professional peers.
Jewell Robinson, producer
and actress, will portray
Aldridge’s daughter
Amanda. Brooks is an educa
tor, musician, director and
actor. He has performed as
the great
baritone/actor/scholar Paul
Robeson in Phillip Hayes
Dean’s play Paul Robeson.
He premiered the title
role in the Anthony Davis
opera X: The Life and Times
of Malcolm X. His theater
roles include Othello and
Lear.A. tenured professor at
Rutgers University he was
the institution’s first black
MFA graduate. Additionally
he served as the National
Black Arts Festival’s
(NBAF) Artistic Director
during the 1990s in Atlanta,
Ga. Brooks has been featured
in such films as American
History X, 15 Minutes, and
The Big Hit. On television,
he is best known for his roles
on Spenser: For Hire and
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
As public program director
at the National Portrait
Gallery (NPG), Robinson
conceives, writes, produces
and occasionally performs in
NPG’s Cultures in Motion
series. A professional actress,
Robinson has worked in
New York and at virtually
every professional theater in
the Washington region.
Commissioned by the Marc
Pachter Fund and written by
Jacqueline Lawton, the the
atrical tribute to Aldridge’s
life is part of an ongoing
series entitled cultures in
motion.
The Theatrical series is
designed to educate, enter
tain and promote mutual
understanding of the diverse
cultures that make up both
the National Portrait Gallery
collection and the mosaic of
American Heritage. Ira
Aldridge: The African
Roscius was produced by the
Smithsonian National
Portrait Gallery, in collabora
tion with the Smithsonian
National Museum for
African American History
and Culture.
