Cheryl Parris 4 W ' Mi ’ireIt is National Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the years of hard work to achieve equity goals in the classroom for females and to ensure American women will be recognized and celebrated in educational institutions, workplaces, and communities throughout the country. Throughout March, The Savannah Tribune will high light several of these women. The 2012 Theme is “Women’s Education-Women’s Empowerment” This week we will highlight Rev. Joyce Hall, Pastor of Living Hope Community Fellowship and Rev. Cheryl Parris, Pastor of St. Matthews Episcopal Church. O' n Tuesday, March 27th more than 300 community volun teers and supporters attended the United Way of the Coastal Empire's 74th Annual Meeting. The cele bration was held at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront honored three Commissioner Holmes Announces Bid for Re-election Dr. Gerry Kramer, Cathy Hill, Jan Spillane, remarkable individuals who have given their time, pas sion and resources to United Way for several decades. Outgoing Board Chair Bert Tenenbaum of Chatham Steel Corporation proudly highlighted the work United Way has done throughout the past year and expressed grat itude to volunteers for their dedicated service to the com munity through United Way work. "One of the character istics I'm most proud of with Samuel G. McCachern, and Dr Joe Buck this United Way is our col lective ability to work together for the betterment of the entire community. Our remarkable success last year was a testament to the strength and generosity of all of our donors and volunteers and the willingness of every day people to step up to help during difficult times," said Tenenbaum. Tenenbaum also recognized the support United Way received from over 29,000 donors and 700 companies during its 2011 fundraising campaign. Tenenbaum recognized out going Board members and bestowed the role of United Way's Chairman of the Board to Cathy Hill, vice president of Georgia Power's coastal region. Hill has been involved with United Way of the Coastal Empire for sev eral years. She helped found United Way's Women's Legacy Council, a powerful Continued from pg.4 Commissioner Holmes announcing bid for re-election C hatham County Commissioner James Holmes announced his bid for re-election Thursday morning. The 2nd District Commissioner made the announcement in Crawford Square, not far from where he grew up. Holmes, who also goes by Coach, says he has a lot of work left to do, including the renovation of county recre ation facilities. "It cost us quite a bit of money to get it back up to where it is now. I want to continue that so we can com plete our facilities so the youth and adults can have top notch community centers in order to perform them selves," said Holmes. He is a graduate of Beach High School and attended Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. Holmes said the priorities for his third term include reducing crime, enhancing recreational activ ities and decreasing the high school dropout rate. Commissioner Odell Sworn in as Recorder’s Court Judge Harris Odell, Jr. is Sworn in by Judge Lewis as his wife, Tabitha looks on. The Swearing In Ceremony for Judge Harris Odell, Jr. was held on Monday at the Old Chatham County Courthouse. Judge Lewis performed the swear ing in ceremony as Odell's wife Tabitha looked on. Chairman Pete Liakakis wel comed the many in the audi ence recognizing the judges and elected officials. Each county commissioner gave remarks. Odell introduced his family members in atten dance. Odell served as com missioner for the 5th District of Chatham County.
