The Georgia Chapter of
The Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society (LLS), the Savannah
Office recognized their vol
unteers at a breakfast this
week.
Volunteers from the dif
ferent fundraising cam
paigns, including Team In
Training, the St.
Joseph’s/Candler Leukemia
Cup Regatta, Light The
Night and Man & Woman of
the Year, as well as Patients
Services, were recognized
for the tremendous work that
is being done in the
Savannah community to help
move LLS’s mission forward
to find cures for blood can
cers and to improve the qual
ity of life for patients and
their families. Patients and
survivors were also on hand
along with individuals from
the medical community.
The highlight of the
event was when the volun
teers helped share their area
of interest within LLS by
performing entertaining skits
for their fellow volunteers.
The enthusiasm of the volun
teers to make each skit a suc
cess was another demonstra
tion of the commitment
shown of the Savannah vol
unteers to the mission of
LLS.
Volunteers were recog
nized for their area of serv
ice, length of service and
commitment to Patient
Services. Each volunteer
was given a pin of recogni
tion as well as a goody bag.
Oglesby Lifts SSU Past Rattlers

Matthew Oglesby's
RBI single in the bottom of
the ninth with two out lifted
Savannah State to a 4-3 vic
tory over Florida A&M at
Tiger Field.
In addition to getting
the game winning hit,
Oglesby was the winner on
the mound. Oglesby came on
in relief and pitched two
innings, giving up one hit
and one walk.He ended the
day going 3-for-4 at the plate
with three RBI.
Oglesby had a run scor
ing single in the bottom of
the first inning, bringing
home Todd Hagen, who ear
lier singled. FAMU (7-
38, 5-13) went ahead 3-1
after scoring twice in the
fifth and once in the top of
the seventh.
In the bottom of the
seventh, the Tigers added
two runs on three hits.
With two outs, Joseph
McCrary, Julius Green and
Oglesby hit back to back to
back singles. Oglesby's
hit scored McCrary while
Green was able to score
thanks to an error by the sec
ond baseman on the same
play to tie the score at 3-3.
With two outs in the
bottom of the ninth,
McCrary and Green drew
back to back walks and
Oglesby stepped up to the
plate and singled to left field
for the win. SSU stranded 11
runners on the day while the
Rattlers left six on base.
Hagen, McCrary and Green
all had two hits for Savannah
State (15-25, 7-8) while
McCrary scored twice.
Tony Covington took
the loss, giving up two
walks, one hit and one run in
one-third of a inning.

Taylor Finishes 2nd
At Charlotte
Invitational
Chantia Taylor finished in second
place in the women's high jump
to lead Savannah State in the
Charlotte Invitational on April 21.
Taylor was fifth in the triple jump.
Kim Wilson was 3rd in the triple
jump and 4th in the long jump.
Other SSU participants in the
triple jump were Indiah Bell
(6th), Rajeanne Jarrett (8th) and
Jaymi White (11th). In the long
jump, White was 7th, Bell was
10th and Jarrett was 11th. For the
SSU men, Justin Taylor was 3rd
in the triple jump and 11th in the
long jump.

points a game which ranked
SSU 12th in the nation among all
Division I schools. SSU also was
ranked 12th in 3-point defense as
opposing teams only made 29.6
3-point shots. Individually, Deric
Rudolph was 13th in 3-point
field goals per game with 2.97
and Rashad Hassan was 18th in
field goal percentage with 57
percent.
Kyle McGowin stuck out 15 bat
ters as Savannah State defeated
Florida A&M 6-0 in the first
game of a double-header at Tiger
Field on April 21. McGowin
pitched a complete game and
only allowed four hits. Darien
Campbell had two hits and two
RBIs in the win while Todd
Hagen and Matt Oglesby added
two hits each. In the second
game, a 8-3 setback, SSU tied the
game at 3-3 in the third but the
Rattlers scored in the fourth and
fifth to go ahead 6-3 and added
two more runs in the seventh. The
Tigers only had five hits and
Julius Green and Michael
McHugh had two hits apiece in a
losing effort. The Tigers won the
weekend series on April 22 with a
4-3 win as Oglesby hit a RBI sin
gle in the ninth with two outs to
score Joseph McCrary for the
game winning run. Oglesby went
3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs
and was also the game winning
pitcher. FAMU led 3-1 after
seven and a half innings but the
Tigers scored twice in the bottom
half to tie the game. Hagen,
McCrary and Green all had two
hits for Savannah State (15-25,7-
8) while McCrary scored twice.
