speak at a seminar entitled “
Getting Started With Raw”
Sunday May 27th at 4 PM, in
the auditorium of the Bull
Street Library in Savannah.
The event is free and open to
all. As a nutritionist, Carolyn
will open the discussion, and
show a film which tells the
evidence based story of
great, replicable results of a
better way to eat. Carolyn

AASU’s Coastal Savannah Writing
Project to Hold Summer Institutes
Armstrong Atlantic
State University's Coastal
Savannah Writing Project
will hold two two-week,
three-credit summer insti
tutes to help local teachers
improve writing and reading
skills in the classroom, as
well as increase student
motivation. The writing
institute is June 18-29, 2012
and the reading institute is
July 9-20, 2012 both from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. in University
Hall, Room 250, Armstrong
Campus, 11935 Abercorn
St., Savannah, Ga.
The writing institute
provides a place and time for
teachers to demonstrate and
learn diverse effective class
room practices, teach and
learn writing processes,
examine writing theory and
research, become comfort
able writing in divergent
modes and genres and share
their writings with col
leagues.
The reading institute is
offered as one of the three
courses that make up the
Armstrong Reading
Endorsement graduate cer
tificate. For participants in
this institute, prerequisites
for the course will be
waived, and the class can
either be taken independent
of the Reading Endorsement
program or applied to the
program. Teachers of all
grade levels and content
areas are welcomed to par
ticipate. Tuition rates apply.

5th Annual Community Awareness
Day to be Held
Beating the Odds All

Park Neighborhood
Association, and the city of
Savannah are proud to
announce our fifth annual
Community Awareness Day
event at Cann Park, 45 and
46th between Bullock and
Stevens St. from 12-4pm.
Awareness Day is an end-of-
the-school year activity to
share information about
community resources and
programs, employment
opportunities, and skills. We
want to keep our students
and families involved in pos
itive activities throughout
the summer months and pro
vide them with information
and community resources
that are available to them
and the entire community.
We are asking all avail
able and interested social
service agencies, churches,
youth programs, employers,
neighborhood associations,
and local entertainers to
come out and set up at this
event or make a donation.
We will have door prizes,
food, games, moon bouncer,
entertainment, fun, and
prayer for the entire commu
nity on Saturday, June 9,
2012 from noon-4:00pm.
This event is free and open
to the public.

Annual Survive the Five...K Helps
Cancer Survivors
Proceeds from the third
annual Survive the Five...K
race will go into a fund to
help cancer survivors with
whatever they need to move
on with life. The race is at
June 2, 8 a.m. at Isle of
Hope Pool, 409 Parkersburg
Road.

Cancer survivors tell of the
“void” that they feel once
their cancer treatment is
complete. During cancer
treatment patients have mul
tiple visits with oncologists,
surgeons, nurses and support
staff. It is their support sys

Senior Student Leadership
Recognition Program Held
On Sunday, May 20,
2012 in the Savannah State
University Student Union
Ballroom at 3pm, a special
ceremony was held for the
first class of Senior SLP stu
dents. These students repre
sent the first group to take
part in a program that was
launched four years ago by
Gulfstream in a partnership
with the Savannah-Chatham
County Public School
System. More than 50 area
businesses support the effort
with dedicated volunteers,
program coordinators, and
community advisors. On
Sunday, 114 Senior SLP stu
dents were honored as par
ents, teachers and principals,
members of the Board of
Public Education, SCCPSS
administration, SLP
Community Advisors, SLP
business partners, and the
Gulfstream Leadership Team
gather to honor their dedica
tion to education. The Senior
SLP Class represents a 98%
retention rate in the program,
as the students along with
their Community Advisors
have remained committed to
SLP over the past 4-years.
