MEUSSA DAVIS
committed to preserving and
protecting Savannah's her
itage, recently donated
$33,000 to the City of
Savannah’s Park and Tree
Department for tree planting.
The donation came
from Historic Savannah
Foundation’s Landmark
District Tree Fund. Founded
in 1999, the Tree Fund has
helped plant more than 400
new trees throughout
Savannah’s National Historic
Landmark District including
Live Oak, Southern
Magnolia, Bosque Elm, Red
Maple and Tulip Poplar.
“This is an important
way for us to give back to the
City of Savannah and fulfill
our mission of protecting our
heritage — in this case the
tradition of an impressive
tree canopy,” said Daniel
Carey, president and CEO of
Historic Savannah
Foundation. “These new
trees not only beautify
Savannah, but they maintain
the legacy of General
Oglethorpe’s plan.”
The Landmark District
Tree Fund is a joint effort
between the City of
Savannah, Historic Savannah
Foundation, The Beehive
Foundation and local citizens
to fund ongoing planting of
canopy trees throughout
Savannah’s National Historic
Landmark District.
The initial goal was to
make up the deficit of
canopy trees lost over time,
which was accomplished by
planting 100 new trees a year
for three years. Since then,
the goal has been to plant
canopy trees on an annual
basis at a one-to-one ratio of
trees lost to trees planted.
