Broken Heart
I write this week’s entry with a
heavy heart as I look around my
lovely city of Savannah. Let me
first begin by making it very clear,
that I am not questioning anyone’s
intelligence or ability to lead. As
a Pastor and a Father I truly un
derstand that leadership is a hard
assignment for anyone, therefore
I am very careful in how I select
my words not to question anyone’s
leadership.
But to be completely honest, my heart is broken when I look
at the leadership of this city. Furthermore, it appears that
we have created a season of infighting that will only lead to
more division within our own community. Just a few years
earlier, we were celebrating all of the accomplishments we
made as an African-American community. We stated with a
sense of pride, the number of African-American in key lead
ership positions in our city.
As if we were in a football game, we scored a touchdown
and we have spent the past two years celebrating in the end
zone not realizing the game is still being played. We are
standing on the sidelines giving ourselves celebratory high-
fives while the other team is marching the ball up and down
the field. It is only one touchdown not the end of the game,
keep playing.
It does not make sense to me, to put individuals in positions
of leadership and not support them and help them in their
endeavors. The key in my humble opinion is trust leader
ship. Let me explain, do we trust the individuals that we have
elected, appointed or hired in various positions ? Can we look
beyond the attacks, fair or unfair, by the Savannah News
Press and realize there are two sides to every story? Please
don’t misunderstand me, I am not making excuses for bad
behavior, I am only suggesting you can't believe everything
you read in the newspaper.
In the words of Toni Braxton, “Un-break My Heart” Savan
nah and let’s come together and stop all the infighting. One
final thought, just because they stick a television camera in
your face doesn't mean you have to say something!
