Presents $26,000 check to SSU
The Savannah Chapter of the Savannah State University
National Alumni Association presented a $26,000 schol
arship check to Savannah State University on Saturday,

$26,001.50 scholarship check
to the university Saturday,
Oct. 6, 2012, on the field at
the SSU v. Morgan State Uni
versity football game.
Presenting the check

Tony Wright, Sr., scholarship
chairwoman Beatrice Camp
bell and SSU sophomore and
scholarship recipient Char
zetta Quarterman, an honor
student recognized by the
chapter in May at its 2012
Influential Alumni Luncheon.
Savannah State Pres. Cheryl
D. Dozier accepted the check
on behalf of the university.
Established in 1890,
Savannah State University is
the oldest public historically
black college or university in
Georgia and the oldest insti
tution of higher learning in
the city of Savannah.

Club has elected its officers
for the 2012-2013 year. The
group is comprised of 13
boys and girls. The newly
elected officers are Ahmod
Williams, president; Rickeia
Dudley, vice-president; Tali-
yah Jones, secretary, Dajanny
Wright, treasurer and Denzel
Brownlee, parliamentar
ian and Regan Smalls, so
cial chairperson. By vote of
the membership, the group
has begun work with two
projects. One is an environ
mental project and the other
is an entrepreneurial project.

Clubs is a unit of the Boys
& Girls Clubs of the Coastal
Empire
As a part of the
Boys & Girls Clubs of Amer
ica, character and leadership
curriculum, Torch Clubs are
chartered, small-group lead
ership and service clubs for
boys and girls ages 11 to 13.
A Torch Club is a powerful
vehicle through which Club
staff can help meet the spe
cial character development
needs of younger adolescents
at a critical stage in their life.
Torch Club members learn
to elect officers and work to
gether to implement activities
in four areas; service to Club
and community; education;
health and fitness; and social
recreation.

presented annually to Torch
Clubs with outstanding pro
grams and activities in each

A Gracious Christmas
Advice and dem
onstrations aimed at making
the upcoming holiday sea
son a memorable one will be
presented at First Presbyte
rian Church’s third annual “A
Gracious Christmas” event
on Nov. 29, the first Thursday
after Thanksgiving.
Featured speaker
Holley Jaakkola will focus
on preparing your home for
a Christmas that’s uniquely
Savannah in character. Also
on tap are a luncheon, a raffle,
the awarding of door prizes
and sales of hand-crafted
items from foreign countries
and of free-trade coffee and
chocolate.
The event will run
from 9; 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the
church, which is on Washing
ton Avenue at Paulson Street,
and proceeds will benefit
charities for women.

Jaakkola is a garden
and floral designer and she is
the co-author of “A Savan
nah Christmas,” a recently
published coffee-table book
filled with holiday recipes
and information on the tradi
tions and styles that mark the
Yuletide in our city.
Workshops will be
presented by Brian Torres,
the co-owner of Form, Re
becca Gardner, who owns an
event planning and decorat
ing shop, and John Davis, the
owner of John Davis Florist
in midtown Savannah.
Torres’ workshop
will involve holiday appetiz
ers, and Gardner’s presenta
tion will focus on gift wrap
ping and table settings. Davis
will discuss using greenery
for the holidays inside and
outside the home.
Torres will also be
organizing the menu for the
luncheon and will be prepar
ing the cheesecakes that will
be served as dessert.
