Volunteers Needed for
Rivers Alive Cleanup
Residents interested
in ridding our waterways of
pollution are invited to par
ticipate in the local Rivers
Alive Cleanup at Hayners
Creek this Saturday, Oct. 27,
2012. The event is part of an
annual statewide campaign
to protect and preserve over
70,000 miles of Georgia’s
rivers and streams, and is a
joint program of the Envi
ronmental Protection Divi
sion Outreach Programs and
the Keep Georgia Beautiful
Foundation.
The local cleanup
will focus on Hayners Creek,
located at the end of Hurst
Avenue, just south of Mont
gomery Crossroad. Cleanup
begins at 8 a.m. from the Riv
ers End boat ramp, at Rivers
End Drive and Hurst Avenue.
Volunteers may bring their
own canoe or kayak, or will
be provided with one. Clean
up materials, T-shirt and
lunch will also be provided to
all volunteers. The event is
one of over 200 cleanups that
will take place in Georgia
this fall that will collect trash
and debris from our streams,
rivers, lakes, wetlands and
the ocean - stretching from
the Conasauga River in the
north to St. Mary’s River in
the south.
“This is an impor
tant event for our communi
ty, both to clean up a stretch
of our rivers and marshes, as
well as to educate the public
about the effects of runoff
pollution and litter on our
waterways,” said Margosia
Jadkowski, City of Savan
nah Environmental Services
Planner.
Last year, Savannah
volunteers removed 30 cubic
yards of trash from the creek,
contributing to the 350 tons
of trash removed from over
1,700 miles of waterways
throughout Georgia. Rivers
Alive is the largest single
volunteer effort to beautify
Georgia’s waterways, attract
ing over 29,000 participants
in 2011.
The Hayners Creek
cleanup is sponsored by the
City of Savannah, Metropoli
tan Planning Commission,
Ogeechee Riverkeeper and
Clean Coast. For more infor
mation, please contact (912)
