Wright Square Makeover Celebrated
Park and Tree Commission Chairman Walt Harper, Post 1 At-Large Alderman Caro
lyn H. Bell, District 4 Alderman Mary Ellen Sprague, District 5 Alderman Estella E.
Shabazz and Mayor Pro-tem Van R. Johnson look on as Park and Tree Director Jerry
Flemming welcomes attendees to Tuesday’s makeover celebration in Wright Square.
Mayor Pro-tem Van
Johnson and members of
City Council joined city staff
and Park & Tree Commission
members Tuesday in Wright
Square to celebrate the make
over of one of Savannah’s
most historic squares.
The Wright Square
makeover started in April,
but was temporarily delayed
when city workers uncov
ered an undocumented cis
tern in the square. After
completing an inspection,
the cistern dome was rein
forced, the site was surveyed
and a permanent marker
was placed above the open
ing. Park and Tree staff then
proceeded with work that
included: relocation of exist
ing plants, pruning of mature
trees, removal and replace
ment of inappropriate trees
and shrubs, repair and relo
cation of benches to improve
pedestrian flow, repairs to the
brick walkways, installation
of new monument viewing
areas, upgrades to the elec
trical circuitry and irrigation
systems, and inspection and
cleaning of the Gordon Mon
ument.
The makeover
significantly increases vis
ibility in the square. “The
landscape in the square was
nearly 30 years old and had
become overcrowded.’’ said
Park and Tree Director Jerry
Flemming. “It became nec
essary to remove some of the
vegetation, the dense foliage
concealed the square from
the surrounding roadways.’’
The Wright Square
makeover is part of a larger
effort by the city’s Park and
Tree Department to assess
conditions in all 22 of Savan
nah’s squares.
