SPORTS WITH WALTER MOORE
Q&A With Savannah State’s Simon Heyward
Silver Cheetahs Medal At 2013 AAU
Club Championships & Junior
Olympic Games
Walter Moore
Simon Heyward is
a senior wide receiver on the
Savannah State football team.
Heyward graduated from
Beach High School. Hey
ward is the star of the Tigers
offense and is coming off his
best season which he caught
44 passes for 715 yards and
6 touchdowns. The son of
Rosalyn Evans, Heyward has
played in 32 games and 116
receptions for 1,381 yards
and 8 touchdowns. Heyward
is also impressed with his
new coaches.
Coach Wilson is a
good coach because he tries
to get the best out of every
player. He screams and yells,
but at the end of the day he is
getting you better.” Heyward
went on to add “Coach Buck
ner wants to see me make it
the next level so he pushes
me hard in practice. He sees
the potential in me and wants
me to be a leader on and off
the field.”
What are your goals in life
once your football playing
days at SSU are over?
“I want to try to go
pro. If that doesn’t happen,
I want to come back and get
my master’s degree and be
come a coach.”
How does the team looking
during the pre-season?
“We are looking pretty good.
We have bonded as a team. It
has been tough for some of us
getting up early and staying
up late night in meetings. But
all together we have come
through.”
You made the MEAC
pre-season first team
offense, was named to
the FCS pre-season wide
receiver watch list as well
as some other pre-season
honors. How do you deal
with the attention while not
letting it affect you?
“Stay humble. It was
Simon Heyward
a long road for me to get to
this point. At the end of the
day, this is preseason and
hopefully I can continue to
I get accolades at the end of
the year.”
What goes into having
good chemistry between
a quarterback and a wide
receiver?
‘Sitting down in the film
room together. We get a
chance to look at us in prac
tice and look at the team we
are going up against to see
what checks we can make
at the line. Also, building a
bond off the field.”
What is it like attending
college and playing football
in your hometown?
“At first coming in I wasn’t
too happy about it. But now
that it’s my senior year, it’s
good to be home around your
friends and family; where the
support is.”
So far, what is your most
memorable moment while
at SSU?
“When I broke Shannon
Sharpe’s single-game receiv
ing record with 220 yards
against North Carolina Cen
tral.”
SSU has not have a win
ning season since 1998.
What is this senior class
doing to try and change
that?
“We want to build a program
and leave out as winners. We
want to be the stepping stone
to start a winning tradition. “

Ti g ers Go Through Marine Boot Camp
For two hours on
August 5, the Savannah State
football team joined forces
with a few good men as 25
captains of the United States
Marine Corps visited SSU
and put the Tigers through a
field obstacle course.
While at a confer
ence on Paris Island, S.C.,
Marine captains from Flori
da, Alabama, Georgia, South
Carolina and North Carolina
came to Savannah to train the
Tigers for the day. The Ma
rines put the Tigers through
four hours of rigorous obsta
cles geared to increase their
mental and physical tough
ness.
Each obstacle was
devoted to a specific lead
ership principle. The Tigers
were asked to complete the
obstacle in their eight-person
squads. Afterwards, they dis
cussed the leadership princi
ple involved.
SSU athletic com
pliance and academic admin
istrators also participate as a
squad.
Obama Honors Negro League Players
At White House
by Perry Green
Special to the NNPA
President Barack
Obama hosted a special
meeting with former Negro
League players and represen
tatives at the White House
recently to honor their con
tributions to the nation’s his
tory, civil rights, and profes
sional baseball.
“Well first of all,
let me just say, what an hon
or it is to have you all in the
White House, I think every
body knows that I’m a pret
ty big sports fan, and I think
that anybody who knows the
history of the Negro Leagues
knows that it was important
not only because some great
baseball was played, that you
saw folks like Satchel Paige
and Josh Gibson display un
believable athletic talent, and
many of the gentlemen who
are here today, but it also
changed our culture,” Obama
said during the meeting.
“You gave opportu
nities for the African Ameri
can community to feel pride
about their athleticism and it
slowly opened the doors for
opportunities in the future.”
One of the organiz
ers of the meeting was Andrea
McCoy-Carty, vice president
of the Judy Johnson Memo
rial Foundation, which seeks
to educate the general public
on the interesting and forgot
ten history of Negro League
Baseball, and to provide an
illustration of the extraordi
nary athletic ability of the
Negro League athletes who
played in virtual anonymity
during the 60-plus years they
were denied the opportunity
to compete in Major League
Baseball.
Among those that
attended the meeting were
Larry Lester, one of the
founders of the Negro League
Baseball Museum in Kansas
City; Minnie Forbes, former
owner of the Detroit Stars;
Carl Long, former outfielder
for the Birmingham Black
Barons; Cliff Layton, former
pitcher for the Indianapo
lis Clowns and New York
Black Yankees; James “Red”
Moore, former first baseman
of the Baltimore Elite Giants
and Atlanta Black Crackers;
Minnie Minoso, former third
baseman of the New York
Cubans; Audrey Simmons,
Executive Director of the
Hubert V. Simmons Negro
League Baseball Museum of
Maryland; Mammie Johnson,
wife of the late Peanut John
son, pitcher for the Indianap
olis Clowns, and many oth
ers.
