On Friday August
16th, R&B songstress and
Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta
reality TV star K. Michelle
was presented with the May
or’s “Ambassador Award” by
Mayor AC Wharton at the
Memphis City Hall.
“This is an honor.
I absolutely love my city,”
K. Michelle said to a small
crowd of press, family, and
close friends. “I want to thank
everyone. It’s been a struggle
and a fight, but I’m just get
ting started in this business.
You have to fight if you want
to be a musician. If this is
what you want to do, you can
never give up on it.”
“It gives me so much
pleasure today to honor one
of our own. I proudly give her
the Ambassador Award... I say
ambassador because this is
someone who was raised up
here, so she found out what
this great city was about,”
said Wharton. “She is the
Memphis story. Not only is
she keeping that story to her
self, everywhere she goes she
tells the Memphis story; per
sonifies the Memphis story.”
The Memphis native
has been known for breaking
boundaries her entire life and
her music is proof of that.
With a classic, mature sound
in the vein of favorite singers
like Whitney Houston and
Mary J. Blige, K. Michelle’s
“Rebellious Soul” is receiv
ing rave reviews from critics.
The lead single, “V.S.O.P.”
is currently in the top 10 on
R&B radio charts and climb
ing.
Keeping in the spirit
of the album’s title, K. Mi
chelle chose to use the re
lease of this album to impact
the lives of the fans that have
been drawn to her because of
her openness with her own
story of survival. Her Rebel
Against campaign has taken
her to local women’s shelters
across the country, in partner
ship with Saving Our Daugh
ters, to empower her fans to
rebel against adversities they
have faced such as domestic
violence and sexual abuse.
“Eye Care” For You”
Macular Degeneration
Macular degener
ation (also called AMD or
age-related macular degener
ation) is an age-related con
dition that affects the central
vision. The part of the retina,
called the macula, starts to
break down and lose its abili
ty to create clear visual imag
es. The macula is responsible
for that part of our sight we
use to read, drive and recog
nize faces. Although the pe
ripheral vision is not affected
by AMD, the most important
aspect of vision is lost.
AMD is the lead
ing cause of vision loss and
blindness in Americans ages
65 and older. And because
older people represent an in
creasingly larger percentage
of the general population,
vision loss associated with
macular degeneration is a
growing problem. Studies
show more than 1.75 million
citizens have significant vi
sion loss from AMD, and that
number is expected to grow.
Macular degeneration can be
classified as the dry or wet
form. Dry AMD is an early
stage of the disease and re
sults from deposits, called
drusen, forming in the mac
ula. Gradual central vision
loss may occur with dry
AMD. Vision loss from this
form of the disease is usually
not as severe as that caused
by wet AMD. Studies have
Dr. J. A. Parker-Herriott
shown that high levels of
antioxidants, zinc, beta caro
tene, and lutein significantly
reduce the risk of advanced
dry AMD and its associated
vision loss.
Wet AMD is the
more advanced and damag
ing stage of the disease. 10%
of dry AMD cases progresses
to wet macular degeneration.
New blood vessels grow
beneath the retina and leak
blood and fluid. This leakage
causes permanent damage to
the cells in the retina, causing
blind spots or a total loss of
central vision. Treatment for
the wet type involves laser
and injection of medication
into the macula.
AMD occurs is
more common in whites and
females. Evidence strongly
suggests that smoking is a
risk factor for macular degen
eration. Other risk factors in
clude having a family history
of AMD, high blood pressure,
and obesity. Some research
ers believe that over-expo
sure to sunlight and a high-fat
diet may also be contributing
factors in developing macular
degeneration.
If you have AMD,
you should be monitoring
your vision with an Amsler
grid. AMD causes the line on
the grid to appear wavy, dis
torted or broken.
If you have vision
loss from AMD, low vision
devices including micro
scopes and telescopes may
help you achieve better vi
sion.
We provide low
vision services and we thor
oughly check for AMD
during your dilated examina
tion.

an eye care provider, we in
