JA A. JahannesTo Unveil Childrens
Book “ W. W.” At Beach Institute
Dr. Ja A. Jahannes,
noted educator, author, poet
and historian, will present a
lecture and a book signing on
his recent publication, “W.
W.” at the Beach Institute on
Sunday, September 8, 2013 at
3:00p.m.
Mr. Law was recog
nized for his work in the Civil
Rights Movement and histor
ic preservation. Bom in Sa
vannah, GA and a graduate of
Savannah State University, he
contributed greatly to the his
tory and culture of Savannah,
the State of Georgia, and the
South. He was an exceptional
organizer on behalf of the cit
izenry. He was the leader of
the Savannah Branch of the
NAACP during the 1960’s
and kept Savannah from
erupting into violence during
the Civil Rights’ straggle.
He helped whites and Blacks
adjust to social changes that
would give African Amer
icans their social, political,
and civil rights. He promot
ed racial harmony. His repu
tation moved President John
F. Kennedy to intervene on
his behalf when his job as a

postal carrier was taken from
him. He was awarded two
honorary doctorate degrees:
Savannah College of Arts
and Design and Savannah
State University. Law found
ed the King-Tisdell Cottage
Foundation, which includes
the historic Beach Institute
(1867) and the King-Tisdell
Cottage(1896) the Negro
Heritage Trail Tour and, the
Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil
Rights Museum.
Jahannes recounts
that he and Mr. Law had
many conversations about
Mr. Law’s childhood. He is
pleased to share the story of
young Westley Wallace Law.

where. He was the keeper of
so much valuable Savannah

what promises to be a great
presentation.”

and Administration/Supervi
sion from Bradley University
and a Ph.D. in Psychology/
Educational Administration
Dr. Priscilla D. Thomas
from the University of North
America. She retired as prin
cipal of Haven Elementary
School after 30 years in edu
cation.
Dr. Thomas has
background as a teacher and
principal; registered meeting
planner/travel consultant/
events planner; found
er/executive director of
Chatham County Youth
Commission and Sum
mer Bonanza Partnership,
Inc.; has served as Chair
man Pro-tem of Chatham
County Commission;
became the “first” Vice
Chair (female and mi
nority) of the Chatham
County Commission; is a
community/youth advo
cate; and serves on vari
ous boards and commis
sions.
She and her husband Na
thaniel have one daugh
ter and one grandson. Dr.
Thomas’ family are lifelong
members of FairLawn Bap
tist Church and First Bryan
Baptist Church.
