Local Author Celebrates The New
Release Of New Book
Author Bill
DeYoung and University
Press of Florida celebrate
the publication of Skyway:
The True Story of Tampa
Bay’s Signature Bridge and
the Man Who Brought It
Down with a launch party
Tuesday, Sept. 24 in the
Ships of the Sea Maritime
Museum’s North Garden.
DeYoung will
speak, answer questions
and present a multimedia
program, including rare
and vintage photographs,
artifacts and never-be
fore-seen video. Copies of
Skyway will be available
for purchase at the event.
On the morning of
May 9, 1980, harbor pilot
John Lerro was guiding a
600-foot freighter, Summit
Venture, into Florida’s Tam
pa Bay. Directly in the ship’s
path was the Sunshine Sky
way Bridge — two ribbons
of concrete, steel, and asphalt
that crossed fifteen miles of
open water. Suddenly, a vio
lent weather cell reduced vis
ibility to zero at the precise
moment when Lerro attempt
ed to direct the 20,000-ton
vessel underneath the bridge.
Skyway tells the entire story
of this horrific event, from the
circumstances that led up to it
through the years-long legal
proceedings that followed.
Through personal interviews
and extensive research, Bill
DeYoung pieces together
the harrowing moments of
the collision, including the
first-person stories of the
survivors, and accounts
of those whose lives were
cut short by the events of
that fateful day. Similarly,
DeYoung details the down
ward spiral of Lerro’s life,
his vilification in the days
and weeks that followed the
accident, and his obsession
with the tragedy well into
his painful last years.
DeYoung also of
fers a history of the ill-fated
bridge, from its construc
tion in 1954, through the
addition of a second parallel
span in 1971, to its eventu
al replacement. He discusses
the sinking of a Coast Guard
cutter a mere three months
before Skyway collapsed and
the Department of Transpor
tation’s dire warnings about
the bridge’s condition. The
result is a vividly detailed
portrait of the rise and fall of
a Tampa Bay landmark. The
event is free and open to the
public.

United Way Announces Funds Available
United Way of the
Coastal Empire is pleased
to announce $290,000 in
funds available for a strate
gic initiative in the area of
Economic Independence that
will enable families and indi
viduals to gain and maintain
employment that provides
self-sustaining wages. Unit
ed Way envisions a commu
nity where all individuals and
families achieve their poten
tial and endeavors to create
that opportunity for those
most in need by providing es
sential funding and capacity
building support to programs
that are effectively impacting
the people of Bryan, Cha
tham, Effingham and Eiberty
counties.
Economic Indepen

areas of particular impor
tance for United Way of the
Coastal Empire, and we are
pleased to announce a fund
ing opportunity for programs
that work collectively in an
evidence-based strategic ap

stable individuals and fami

The goal of this
special initiative is to build
career pathways that provide
career advancement opportu
nities for low-skilled work
ers and job seekers to obtain
family-sustaining wages.
Research indicates that com

have the potential to provide
improved opportunities for
residents by attracting busi
nesses and revitalizing neigh
borhoods. Therefore, United
Way is interested in investing
in a multifaceted strategy that
will enable individuals and
families to gain and maintain
employment that provides
self-sustaining wages and al
leviates their need for public
