Habitat Savannah Receives
Grant From Target
Habitat for Hu
manity Savannah, the area’s
leading builder of affordable
housing, recently received a
$3,000 grant from Target to
defray the costs of Habitat
Savannah’s homeownership
program.
Virginia Brown,
Habitat’s executive director,
accepted the check at a pre
sentation staged earlier today
and attended by several Tar
get team members, including
Melinda Macdonald, General
Manager of Target’s regional
distribution center in Mid
way, GA as well as Rosema
rie Sutton, General Manager
of Target 3810/9417 and Olga
Espinoza of Target 3810/9417
in Savannah, GA.
Savannah,
a city in which 25.1% of the
residents live in poverty, is
experiencing an affordable
housing crisis of epic pro
portions. “One cannot imag
ine the assault that poverty
inflicts on the financial and
physical well-being of Savan
nah’s families,” said Habitat’s
executive director Virginia
Brown. “Studies consistently
demonstrate that housing is a
critical factor in determining
long-term family success.”
Through Habitat for Humani
ty Savannah, the community’s
most vulnerable populations
can access affordable hous
ing, thanks to an innovative
model that partners corpora
tions, individual volunteers,
and applicant families in de
veloping decent and energy
efficient homes that a Habitat
family will one day purchase.
Strict guidelines govern the
selection of partner families,
ensuring that Habitat’s home-
owners are those in need.
Habitat for Humanity Sa
vannah builds safe, decent,
affordable housing. Re
sponding to the expanding an
assessment of partner family
needs, the organization has
reconfigured its building pro
gram to meet green building
standards. Building green
positions Habitat Savannah
to address energy poverty, or
the absurdly high cost-burden
that impoverished families
bear as they navigate living in
poverty housing.
“We are grateful
for Target’s support,” said
Brown.
