Savannah Branch, held their
first scholarship luncheon
at the Marriot Riverfront
Hotel, on August 10, 2013.
The luncheon was a tremen
dous success. The Savannah
Branch was founded June 30,
2013. The National Associ
ation of University Women
was founded 103 years ago
in Washington D.C. The or
ganization was founded to
stimulate young women to at
tain professional excellence,
to promote personal and in
tellectual fellowship among
professional women. They
are involved in supporting
education, civic and health
issues.
The Savannah
Branch will make contribu
tions in all areas by address
ing education issues, women
issues and strategically part
nering with allied organiza
tions. Their main focal point
is to address the needs of
high school graduate students
in offering scholarships to
help further their educational
goals.

West Broad Street YMCA Offers
Afterschool Meal Program
The West Broad
Street YMCA is offering an
Afterschool Meal Program
throughout the 2013-14
school year to provide chil
dren with additional nutrition
and learning opportunities
needed to be healthy and suc
ceed in school. As part of a
national partnership between
YMCA of the USA and the
Walmart Foundation, the pro
gram will provide activities
to help improve academic
skills in subjects like reading,
math and arts. The program
will also make a healthy din
ner available to kids who may
otherwise be at risk of hunger
when the school day ends.
As a leading non
profit committed to healthy
living, the Y is also working
to improve the nutritional
value of all meals and snacks
served in early child care and
afterschool settings.

The Class Of ’64 Pays It Forward

On Friday, August
31, 2013, Class President
Lugenia Griffin Clark and
representatives from the So-
phronia M. Tompkins High
School Class of 1964 pre
sented a check for $3,416.00
to Savannah State University
(SSU). The donation, pre
sented to SSU President Dr.
Cheryl Davenport Dozier, is
earmarked for the Closing the
Gap Scholarship Fund which
was established by Dr. Dozi
er. The fund makes resources
available to graduating se
niors who have an outstand
ing financial obligation that
hinders graduation and who
have no other means for sup
port. The maximum award
amount is $1,500.
The THS Class of
’64 Scholarship was estab
lished and is funded annually
by the Class for students at
tending SSU. This latest gift
to the university is another
way for the Class to give back
to deserving young scholars
in the community. The THS
Class of ‘64 believes that the
education of students is the
responsibility of all of us and
as stake-holders they accept
the Closing the Gap Fund as
their opportunity to provide
needed support at a critical
time in the life of prospective
graduates.
The Class will cel
ebrate their 50 th graduation
anniversary with a Grand
Reunion in 2014. They have
been meeting, worshipping
together, traveling and spon
soring community projects
on a regular basis for the past
49+ years.
