The trusty bicy

fastest commute downtown
during the eight annual
Dump the Pump Challenge
this past Thursday June 18,
2015.
Savannah Bicy
cle Campaign member Jen
Colestock pedaled across
the City Hall finish line
at 8:18am, 22 minutes af
ter departing the 12 Oaks
Shopping Center south of
Deranne Avenue. Parrish
Herron of the Savannah
Mobility and Parking Ser
vices Department followed
her two minutes later. Thirty
seconds later, Chatham Area
Transit Analyst, Enoch Du
mas, crossed the line after
riding comfortably in the
Abercom 14 bus to down
town.
Alderwoman Mary
Ellen Sprague presented the
coveted Dump the Pump
medal to Colestock, which
is her third straight victory,
and stated “We all know that
alternative forms of trans
portation such as cycling
and mass transit save you
money and are better for the
environment, but what this
shows is they can often save
you time, too.”
The competitors
had to follow all traffic
laws and take the most di
rect route available. The
bus rider got off at the
nearest bus stop to City
Hall, while the car compet
itor drove down Abercom
and Drayton streets, then
parked at the Whitaker
Street Garage and walked
the block to the City Hall
finish line.
The cyclist,
meanwhile, could ride di
rectly to the finish line,
where a City bike rack is
located - one of more than
150 bike racks added to
downtown Savannah over
the past five years.

World Changers
Improves Savannah
More than 12,000
students made a decision
to pay money out of their
own pockets in order to
help improve living condi
tions of people across the
United States and Canada.
One hundred eighty-eight
students from across the
nation came to Savannah,
Georgia the week of June
13-20 working on a variety
of assignments that range
from painting houses to put
ting siding on homes. The
students stayed at Calvary
Temple Baptist Church for
the week and worked at 17
different work sites. The
City of Savannah Georgia
Agency provided funding
for supply for them to revi
talize substandard housing.
World Changers works with
Savannah Southern Baptist
Association.
On average, par
ticipating students pay S250
to take part in the week. This
summer, World Changers
projects will take place in
more than 75 cities in the US
and Puerto Rico.
In its 25th summer
of operation. World Chang
ers is honored to assist cit
ies across North America to
serve their residents. “World
Changers brings great ben
efits into a city partnership.
By providing free labor a
city has more resources to
their citizens. Cities that
partner with World Chang
ers also give students a prac
tical way to serve others.”
says Dave MacNeill, team
leader for World Changers.
World Changers is a min
istry of LifeWay Christian
Resources.
Following a
six-session “how-to” study
that participants complete
prior to coming, students
serving Savannah Georgia
will hit the ground running.
The major work begins
Monday of the project.
Pump commuter challenge
is a fun way to encourage
Savannahians to explore
their transportation options
and remind them that trav
eling by car isn’t always the
fastest way to go,” said John
Bennett, Executive Direc
tor of the Savannah Bicycle
Campaign. “Bicycling and
transit are viable alterna
tives for many people and
we hope this event will in
crease interest in affordable
and healthy transportation.”
