If a runoff elec tion is required, it will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. Citizens who would like to vote in the November 3, 2015 City Elections must register to vote by October 2, 2015. Mayor Edna Jackson and the current Aldermen were elected on November 8, 2011 and December 6, 2011. We are using two dates because the Mayor and the Post 2 Aider- man at Large were elected on December 6, 2011 during a run-off election. The oth er members of City Coun cil were elected during the November 8, 2011 General Election. The tenn of office for all of these public offi cial will end on December 31,2015. City Elections in Savannah are considered “non-partisan” which indi cates that there are no Party Primaries and the candidates are not required to declare a party affiliation. In addition to May or Edna Jackson, all of the members of the City Coun cil, except Post 2 Alderman at Large Thomas Bordeaux Jr., have announced that they will seek re-election. These incumbent members of the Sa' The Mayor of Sa vannah is the only mem ber of City Council whose length of service is subject to tenn limits. Mayor Jackson is seeking her second four- year tenn. Several citizens have announced that they will become candidates for City Council. Qualifying will begin on Monday, Au gust 31, 2015 and continue through September 3, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The final day for qual ifying is Friday September 4, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Office of the Clerk of City Council. The qualifying fees for the City of Savannah’s municipal election are S1,620 for May or and $43 5 for Aldennan. We will list all of the candi dates when qualifying ends. Not that he’d wish it on anyone, but it was during his ten-year sentence in prison that Lyfe Jennings developed his honest sound, thanks to isolation and Erykah Badu. Reg istration is at 8 and the pad dle starts at 9:00 a.m. The fee is $50 and includes live music and lunch by Chipot- le after the 3-mile paddle to the UGA Marine Extension Aquarium, as well as trolley transportation back to the starting point. The Savannah Community Mourns the Loss of Attorney Sage Brown Attorney Sage Brown The Savannah community mourns the loss of a local attorney and civ il rights champion, Sage Brown. He passed away Sat urday morning after a battle with leukemia. He was 68 years old. Brown was among the few to change the face of public education in Cha tham County. In 1963 he and 19 other African Amer ican students integrated the Savannah Chatham County School System . Brown along with George Shinhoster and 5 others entered all white Groves High School in Sep tember 1963. It was their senior year and they fought a year long battle of verbal and sometimes physical abuse. Brown was one of the foot soldiers in the sit-ins and demonstrations held in Savannah. He was also a dec orated war hero. He earned two Purple Hearts during three combat tours in Viet nam. Brown joined Georgia Bar Association in January 1978. The Fair Hous ing Council and Savannah Chatham County School System present the entries and winning works from the 2015 Annual Fair Housing Council Poster Contest now through December 31 at the City of Savannah’s Midtown Municipal Building. This year’s Fair Housing Poster Contest features twenty-six posters created by students from Hubert Middle, Gar rison, Coastal Middle and Hesse K-8, relating to this year’s theme: Fair Housing: It’s not an Option, It’s the Law! Posters were made in color on 11” x 17” paper and submitted to the Savan nah-Chatham County Fair Housing Council, Inc. in early spring.
