GPB To Air Documentary
That Explores the Life of
Flannery O’Connor
Beata Productions announces the first-ever feature
length documentary about acclaimed short story writer and
Georgia native Flannery O’Connor.
The film is scheduled to broadcast on Georgia
Public Broadcasting on Tuesday, April 11th at 7pm. It has
been featured at several film festivals and won “Best Docu
mentary” at a recent Georgia Film Festival.
An icon of Southern literature, O’Connor is best
known for works such as “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,”
“Good Country People,” and “Everything That Rises Must
Converge.”
Uncommon Grace: The Life of Flannery O’Con
nor traces the people and events that would help shape
her remarkable career, including her upbringing in the
class-conscious South of the 1930s and her battle with the
autoimmune disease lupus, which would ultimately take her
life at age 39.
Bom in Savannah in 1925, O’Connor moved to
Milledgeville at age 13, attending Peabody High School
and later enrolling at what was then known as Georgia
State College for Women. After receiving a master’s degree
from the University oflowa and briefly residing on the East
Coast, she returned to the area several years later. While
residing at Andalusia, the 550-acre family farm just outside
of Milledgeville, her writing flourished.
As the film points out, the geography and people
of central Georgia played a vital role in her fiction. In fact,
the writer based many of her quirky characters on local res
idents she had either observed or heard about.
“A lot of readers get a brief introduction to Flan
nery O’Connor in short fiction collections or in a literature
class somewhere along the way,” Kurt said. “By under
standing her key life experiences, I think fans will be able
to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for her
extraordinary work.”
Uncommon Grace features commentary from nu
merous O’Connor experts, including Kennesaw State Uni
versity professor David King, biographer Brad Gooch and
O’Connor friend William A. Sessions. The documentary,
which also includes dozens of rare photographs, has been
airing on PBS stations throughout the country.
