Houston Braces For Round 2
of Hurricane Harvey
Flooding in Bayou Buffalo in Houston
Gulf.
Meanwhile, Pres

an emergency disaster in
neighboring Louisiana,
where the southwest portion
of the state is bracing for an
additional 15 to 25 inches of
rain. The declaration, effec
tive Aug. 27, authorizes the
Federal Emergency Man
agement Agency to bolster
the response efforts of local
authorities.

In Houston, reser
voirs swollen by rain from
Hurricane Harvey were
opened early Monday, a
move that was expected to
flood more homes — but
one that the Army Corps of
Engineers says is needed to
limit the scope of the disas
ter that’s threatening lives
and property in Texas.
Several deaths
have been reported in the
floodwaters, but the ex
act number is unclear. A
spokeswoman with the Har
ris County Institute of Fo
rensic Sciences says at least
six deaths are suspected of
being related to the stonn.
Around midday
Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott
activated the entire Texas
National Guard to support
communities coping with
the flooding. Thousands of
Guard members were al
ready deployed in the effort;
the number now stands at
roughly 12,000.
Gates to Houston’s
reservoirs were opened as
emergency crews and resi
dents scrambled to deal with
the intense rains brought
by Harvey, which became
a tropical storm after mak
ing landfall as a Category 4
hurricane late Friday. Cata
strophic floods are expected
to continue as Harvey has

PASTOR TTACHEP,
Communities In
Schools (CIS) of Savannah
is kicking off the 2017-2018
school year #ALLINFORK-
IDS!
Join us as we in
troduce our 2017-2018
#ALLINFORKIDS spokes
woman, Kim Gusby of
WSAV, and hear from local
community leaders about
the importance of support
ing our students and how
#ALLINFORKIDS impacts
the entire community.
With over 25% of
Savannah living in poverty,
and upwards of 50% living
in poverty in some neigh
borhoods, students from
those neighborhoods face
challenges outside the class
room that can stand in the
way of success inside the
Joe Buck
classroom.
Communities In Schools
(CIS) staff work inside
schools full time, every day,
to remove those barriers by
building one-on-one rela
tionships that empower stu
dents to stay in school and
succeed.
Poor education
al outcomes perpetuate the
cycle of poverty and crime.
With the increase in what
are known as ‘high poverty’
schools, to break that cycle
of poverty, our services are
needed now more than ever.
These are all our kids. Join
us and learn how you can
help CIS expand our reach,
grow our program, and en
gage the community at all
levels.
There is no charge
to attend, but reservations
are required. Please RSVP
by clicking the link below.
