Black Unity Awards Program
The New York
Chapter of Kawaida Orga
nizations (NAKO) in con
junction with the Interna
tional African Arts Festival
(IAAFestival) will host the
49th Malcolm X Black Uni
ty Awards Program.
The Awardees for
tliis year are Dr. Julius Gar
vey son of Marcus Mosiah
Garvey, and Sister Maisha
Ongoza, chair of Philadel
phia Chapter of the Nation
al Association of Kawaida
Organizations. Both of these
individual have a rich ac
tivist history of serving the
world African community.
The program will
open with a film on Mal
colm’s life.
Awardees will
speak to how Malcolm X
has influenced their lives
and his Message for our
time.
This program will
be held on Sunday, May 20,
from 3pm to 5pm, at Bed-
Stuy Restoration Plaza in
The International African
Arts Festival office, suite
401.

STEM Academy at
Bartlett Receives
STEAM Certification
The Georgia De
partment of Education has
awarded the STEM Acad
emy at Bartlett STEAM
Certification. STEAM
stands for Science, Technol
ogy, Engineering, Art and
Mathematics. The STEM
Academy at Bartlett was
the state of Georgia’s first
STEM-certified middle
school and now becomes
just the second STEAM-cer-
tified middle school in the
state.
The STEM Acad
emy Principal, Dr. Jimmie
Cave, is thrilled by the
honor “We are elated to
have earned STEAM certi
fication. Our teachers work
extremely hard each day to
provide a unique education
al experience for our young
people. I am so proud of the
staff and students.”
STEAM is the in
tegration of science, tech
nology, engineering, and
mathematics infused with
meaningful arts integration.
To be awarded STEAM
certification, schools must
submit an application show
casing they meet specific
criteria, including evidence
of teacher collaboration,
business and industry part
nerships, high levels of math
and science instruction, and
an integrated, project-based
STEAM curriculum. As
well, multiple site visits
with a team from the Geor
gia Department of Educa
tion are conducted.
The school will
host an awards ceremony
at a future date to be de
termined and will receive
a banner in recognition of
the certification. Part of the
Savannah-Chatham County
Public School System, The
STEM Academy @ Bartlett
is a specialty middle school
serving sixth through eighth
grade students. FETC’s
2016 STEM middle school
of the year, the school was
recently awarded the Tech
nology Association of Geor
gia’s 2017 STEM Education
Award for Middle School.
