“EYE CARE” FOR YOU
Doctor, What’s That Lump On My Eyelid:
Have you ever had
a lump or bump suddenly
appear on your eyelid and
wondered where it came
from and what is it? Any
lump or bump that shows
up on the lids should nev
er be taken lightly. The
most common eyelid lumps
are known as hordeolums
(or styes) and chalazions.
However, some lumps and
bumps can be more serious.
To know the difference, you
should have it evaluated.
Styes (or hordeo
lums) develop when a gland
at the base of an eyelash
becomes infected. Resem
bling a pimple on the eyelid,
a stye can grow on the inside
or outside of the lid. Styes
are not harmful to vision,
and they can occur at any
age. Signs and symptoms
of styes are pain, redness,
tenderness and swelling.
Sometimes just one area is
swollen; other times, the en
tire eyelid swells.
Most styes heal
within a few days on their
own. Applying hot com
presses for 10 to 15 min
utes, several times a day
can help to relieve pain and
Dr. J. A. Parker
sometimes resolve the stye.
Other times, oral antibiotics
are necessary. Never “pop”
a stye like a pimple; allow it
to rupture on its own. If you
have frequent styes, your
eye doctor may prescribe
antibiotics to prevent reoc
currence.
Another type
of eyelid lump is called a
chalazion. Often mistak
en for a stye, a chalazion
is an enlarged, blocked oil
gland in the eyelid. A chal
azion mimics a stye for the
first few days, but then later
turns into a painless hard,
round bump. Warn com
press and oral antibiotics are
also helpful to cause these
lesions to resolve. Howev
er, injection of medicine or
excision of the lesion may
be needed if the lump is re
sistant to resolving.
Other lumps and
bumps can be more seri
ous, some even cancerous.
Therefore, NEVER ignore
any lump on the eyelids. I
will be happy to evaluate
and treat your unusual eye
lid lumps and bumps. I re
cently completed a course
allowing me to be certified
to provide injections into the
eyelids for this condition.

care provider, I invite you to
