Ways Millennials
Can Help Their
Parents Get Fit
Aging baby boom
ers who neglect their health
and fitness don’t just harm
themselves. Their lifestyles
also affect their adult chil
dren, who eventually could
end up caring for them -
both financially and phys
ically - as their health de
clines.
So children have
a vested interest in encour
aging their parents to get fit
and stay fit.
But young adults
who cringe at their parents’
eating and exercise habits
may be reluctant to broach
the subject. How can they
start such a conversation?
One tiling that
might be tempting, but prob
ably won’t work, is a harsh
lecture, says Jaime Brenkus
(www.exercisewithjaime.
com), a nationally recog
nized fitness expert and fit
ness coach for Evergreen
Wellness®, which provides
videos and articles to help
older adults enjoy healthier
lives.
A few starter tips
that can help older people
include:
Encourage them
to drink more water. Not
everyone drinks as much
water as they should - even
though tliis is a healthy habit
that’s simple to accomplish,
glasses of water at all.
Recommend they
try strength training. The
most effective way to in
crease metabolism and to
help reverse the aging pro
cess is stimulating mus
cles by lifting challenging
weights to increase lean
muscle mass, Brenkus says.
Make sure they so
cialize. Studies have shown
that people who are active
socially are healthier and
live longer lives. Socializing
helps reduce the stress that
can contribute to a number
of health problems.
5 Ways To Fight
Fatigue And
Energize Your
Life
Feeling tired is a common
complaint people express.
Sometimes the self-descrip
tion morphs into “I feel tired
all the time,” and experts say
that’s when extreme tired
ness becomes better known
as fatigue.
Fatigue, when
someone lacks energy and
feels exhausted mentally
or physically, can negative
ly impact performance at
work, family life, and social
relationships. Often, it is not
a medical issue, but one that
can be reversed by a life
style change.
Stress, Dr. Gup
ta says, can lead to fatigue
symptoms such as a craving
for sweets and salty foods,
difficulty sleeping and irrita-
