WWW.ihiii3i ;i hi i i I m IK 1 .chi iii New York Life Savannah Presents $27,500 Check To SCCPSS New York Life’s Savannah General Of fice presented a check for $27,500 to the Savannah Chatham County Public School System last Mon day, June 4, for participat ing in the New York Life Grief-Sensitive Schools Ini tiative. Over the past sev eral years, the New York Life Foundation, the char itable arm of the company, in partnership with Nation al Center of School Crisis and Bereavement, has been working with the leading K-12 education profession al organizations to form the Coalition to Support Griev ing Students to develop a set of materials and a website, www. grieving students. org. The Coalition found through a survey that just seven percent of school teachers feel adequately prepared to help grieving students when they return to the classroom, even though 70 percent of them have a grieving student in their classroom at any given time. Studies show that a child’s unresolved grief can have a social and emotional impact on him or her, leading to behavioral issues and poor performance in school. Stacy Abrams Invited To Speak At Juneteenth In Wells Park! The Daughters of Mary Magdalene have invit ed the Democratic Nominee for Governor Stacy Abrams to speak at the Historical Juneteenth Festival on Sat urday, June 16. The Hon ors Program will begin at 11am at Wells Park (38th St. & Montgomery St.). The history of Juneteenth and Ms. Abrams winning the Democratic Nominee is interrelated. Prior to the independence of our Black enslaved people, people like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and many more strong Black people fought to get legislation passed for our complete freedom. Once we were treed on June 19th, Stacey Abrams 1865, they continued to fight for Black political power in Congress! As a result of the struggle and courage of our enslaved ancestors, Black people; such as, Hiram Rev els: first African American to join the Senate, P.B.S. Pinchback: first Black Gov ernor in the U.S. where able to gain powerful positions in Congress. One hundred and fifty three years later, Stacy Adam’s vision is the same as our Juneteenth ancestors. They were determined to gain equality, freedom and justice for all people. In addition, they where deter mined to prove that in spite of slavery and unfair treat ment, they were going to keep on pushing until they saw the light of freedom. Bom and raised in New York City, he was encouraged to pursue his interest in music by his fa ther, an accomplished jazz pianist. Having graduated from the distinguished Man hattan School of Music, he has been playing and teach ing for more than 10 years.
