Time” slave sale, which
happened in Savannah,
Georgia on March 2nd and
3rd, 1859. It is on record as
the largest sale of enslaved
persons inU.S. history.

The Black Histo
ry Scholars Bowl (BHSB)
was created to teach young
people about African-Amer
ican history in a significant,
meaningful, and impact
ing way. The Black His
tory Scholars Bowl is the
brainchild of Alderwoman
Carol Hodges Bell. Teams
from five Savannah-Cha-
tham County Public mid
dle schools will compete in
the Black History Scholars
Bowl. Those schools in
clude Myers, Mercer, West
Chatham, Southwest, and
the STEM Academy @Bart-
lett. Students will demon
strate their knowledge of
American and local history
from an African-American
perspective in a quiz bowl.
The Preliminary
and Championship rounds
will take place at the Beach
Institute African Ameri
can Cultural Center, 502 E.
Harris Street, in Savannah
on Saturday, February 23,
2019, at 12:00 noon. The
event is free and open to the
public.

Nu Chapter Teams Up With Faith
In Action
On Wednesday,
January 9, 2019 mem
bers of Nu Chapter of Iota
Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc.
teamed up with St. Phil
ip Monumental A.M.E.
Church and the Faith in
Action Ministry to serve
dinner to the three families.
The Faith in Action Minis
try is under the guidance of
Ms. Evelyn Russell and Ms.
Faye Green. This ministry
provides housing and meals
for one week at the church
for families who are in tran
sition to securing their own
home. This partnership was
part of the Sorority’s IMAP
(Iota Mothers Assistance
Program). Nu Chapter has
participated with this minis
try for the past three years.
St. Philip Monumental is
under the leadership of Rev.
Dr. Bernard Clarke. The
event was held 6:00 pm in
the church’s fellowship hall.

Pre-K Lottery Application Process Opens

Lottery Funded Sites will
be available on paper and
online beginning February
20, 2019 through March 7,
2019. Online applications
and more information can
be found at http://pk.sccpss.
com and paper applications
can be found at the Pre-K
school sites as well as at the
front reception desk at 208
Bull Street.
To qualify for the
lottery process, parents must
present the child's birth cer
tificate and proof of address
to one of the three Pre-K
school sites they can select
on their application. All ap
plications must be submit
ted by March 7, 2019. An
independent, computerized
lottery process will take
place on April 4, 2019 and
parents will be notified of
their child’s placement or
wait list status by email.
Funding from the Georgia
Lottery provides a limited
number of Pre-Kindergarten
classes. The program pro
vides services to children
who are four years old on
or before September 1, 2019
and residing in Chatham
County.
