with his family by his side.
He was a businessman and

tioned to run for the First
District Aldennatic seat in
the upcoming municipal
election to be held in No
vember.

Diversity In The Media

Georgia Hosts Komen Scholar
Researching Breast Cancer Vaccine
Dr. Keith Knutson
The Southern
Regional Press Institute
(SRPI) was held February
2 8-March 1 on the campus
of Savannah State Universi
ty (SSU). This year’s theme
was “Diversity in Media:
A-F: Grading the Media on
its Efforts to Be Inclusive of
All Voices.”
The opening ses
sion was held at 9 am with
the keynote address deliv
ered by award winning and
Emmy nominated produc
er Natalie Bullock Brown.
Brown is currently chair of
and an assistant professor in
the Department of Film &
Interactive Media at Saint
Augustine’s University in
Raleigh, North Carolina.
Brown was presented the
Louis R. Lautier Award for
Career Achievement.
This year’s Insti
tute included workshops by
the region’s leading mass
media professionals with
topics ranging from race and
gender diversity in the me
dia, to include newsrooms
photography the film indus
try and the arena of public
relations. The opening day
of events culminated with
the SRPI Hall of Fame. The
Hall of Fame honors persons
who have given tirelessly of
themselves throughout the
years to aid in the success of
the SRPI.

Affiliate is hosting Komen
Scholar Dr. Keith Knutson
on Tuesday, March 12 at
6:00 p.m. at the GSU/Ann-
strong Campus. Dr. Knut
son, a Professor of Immu
nology at the Mayo Clinic,
is currently researching a
possible breast cancer vac
cine and will discuss his
work with the public.
‘We are excited to
have such a well-respected
scientist come to speak to
our community,’ said Aileen
Gabbey, Executive Director
for Susan G. Komen Coastal
Georgia. ‘Research is criti
cal in our fight against breast
cancer. ’
The evening is free
and open to the public. Dr.
Knutson will be available to
meet the community, answer
questions, and detail his cur
rent research as part of the
Komen Scholar team.
‘This is a great op
portunity to hear more about
the cutting-edge research
Komen is doing,’ said Ju
lie Schwartz, Community
Engagement Manager. ‘Dr.
Knutson is looking forward
to sharing his work and
meeting those who are inter
ested in these new develop
ments.’
Dr. Keith Knutson
currently serves at the Mayo
Clinic in Jacksonville, Flori
da as Director of the Clinic’s
Cancer Immunology and
Immunotherapy Program.
His work includes research
on cancer prevention and re
currence, cell biology, signal
transduction, breast cancer
tumor-initiating cells, breast
cancer subtypes, and immu
notherapies.
In addition to Dr.
Knutson’s research, Su
san G. Komen also funds
other scholars whose work
has contributed to the fight
against breast cancer.
