Phoenix Makes
All-SIAC Team
Eric Phoenix
Savannah native
and Benedict College quar
terback Eric Phoenix has
earned all conference honors
from the Southern Intercol
legiate Athletic Conference
for his play during the 2022
season. Phoenix was named
to the Second Team.
Phoenix helped
lead the Tigers to a unde
feated regular season and a
conference championship
while earning a berth in the
Division II playoffs.
Benedict earned a
bye in the first round of the
playoffs but faced Wingate
in the second round where
they lost 23-6 on November
26.
Phoenix finished
the 2022 season by complet
ing 64 percent of his pass
attempts for 2,051 yards
and 15 touchdowns. He also
ran for 233 yards and four
touchdowns.
Morehouse Coach
Resigns
Rich Freeman
Rich Freeman has
stepped down from his posi
tion as the Morehouse Col
lege head football coach.
Freeman had been
the head coach of the Ma
roon Tigers since 2007 and
George Copeland
guided his teams to a record
of 75-75. His 2010 squad,
which had a 8-3 record, was
the first Morehouse football
team ever selected to com
pete in the NCAA Division
II playoffs. Freeman was
named SIAC Coach of the
Year in 2018 after his team
posted a 7-3 record which
included a win over FCS op
ponent Arkansas Pine Bluff.
2018 was the last
season Morehouse had a
winning record. The 2022
team finished the season 1-9
with its lone win coming
against rival Clark Atlanta.
George Copeland
has been appointed the
Morehouse interim head
coach. Coach Copeland has
served as the assistant head
coach/defensive coordina
tor for the football program
since 2007.

Bria Gibbs had
15 points and 13 rebounds
to lead the Savannah State
women’s basketball team to
a 61-53 road win over Ken
tucky State in a game played
on November 26.

points and Jashiyah Jones
contributed ten points in the
win.

The game was tied
at 15 at the end of the open
ing quarter but SSU out-
scored the Thorobreds 17-6
in the second quarter to send
Savannah State into the half
with a 32-21 advantage.
SSU led by as
many as 13 in the third quar
ter and a 3-pointer by Jones
expanded the Fady Tigers
lead to 57-42 with just un
der four minutes left in the
game.
The win keeps Sa
vannah State undefeated at
3-0 overall and gives them a
1-0 SIAC record.
At press-time,
SSU was ranked 25th in the
WBCA Division II poll and
was eighth in the D2SIDA
Jashiyah Jones
South Region poll.
Tigers Beat Kentucky State

The Savannah
State men’s basketball team
posted a 65-59 road win
over Kentucky State on No
vember 26.
The victory gives
SSU a 1-0 conference re
cord while they improve to
2-1 overall.
The Tigers led 36-
32 at the half as SSU shot
54 percent from the held
and made 57 percent of
their 3-point attempts in the
opening period.
Feading by two,
early in the second half, Sa
vannah State went on a 16-5
run to open up a 13-point
lead with 11:19 remaining.
The Thorobreds never got
any closer than five the re
mainder of the game.
Elavian Bowles
had 12 points for the Tigers
while Ayjay Plain chipped
in ten points. Farson Ash
ford had eight rebounds.
On Nov. 22, Sa
vannah State traveled to St.
Augustine, Florida to face
Flagler and returned home
with a 86-50 setback.
With 11:40 on the
clock, the Tigers were down

by just seven points but
Flagler went on a 21-0 run
to start the blowout and SSU

Larson Ashford
never recovered.
Savannah State
trailed by 24 at the half and
by as many as 38 in the sec
ond period.
Eleik Bowles,
Plain and Warner Davis all
scored 11 points for SSU
while Ashford grabbed five
rebounds.
