Parents are the
most important. In all in
stances, we need to educate
and encourage parents to
better assess the needs of
their children, recognizing
and staying abreast of what
is going on in their child’s
life. The forum’s takeaways
are:
• Contact Work (Pres
ence is more important than
presents. Taking time and
spending time with children
is crucial.)
• Coping Strategies
(Teach children how to cope
with problems or disap
pointments.)
• Communications (Meet
children where they are.)
• Consistency (develop
structure, let the child know
what to expect as much as
possible.)
• Choice (Help children
to understand the conse
quences of their actions and
choices.)
• Challenges (Help chil
dren to understand how
challenges are a part of
life and help them to meet
growth opportunities.)
• Collaboration (Support,
volunteers, share informa
tion and resources, and stay
in touch with others in the
community who have the
same or similar objectives
of serving youth.)
