Savannah Police Add Therapy Dog To
Behavioral Health Unit
A 10-week old
Labrador puppy named
Goose begins training this
week as Savannah Police
Department’s first therapy
dog.
“This is something
that will be an asset for de
partment members and the
community,’’ Chief Lenny
Gunther said. “Whether it’s
an officer who needs a little
nuzzle after a stressful call
or it’s a community member
who is going through a trau
matic incident, Goose will
be here to help.’’
A therapy dog is a
dog that has been specifical
ly trained to provide com
fort and affection to people
other than its owners. Ther
apy dogs have been used in
visits to hospitals, schools,
nursing homes, disaster
zones and anywhere people
may be in distress.
Goose has been as
signed to handler Cpl. Julie
Cavanaugh of the Behav
ioral Health Unit and will
respond with her as part of
her duties. The Behavioral
Health Unit responds to calls
involving people who are in
distress or are in mental cri
sis. If needed, Goose will be
deployed to assist and calm
situations that BHU may be
handling. Goose can also be
used in the department for
any situation where a lit
tle comfort may be needed,
whether that is comforting
an officer or comforting a
person who witnessed or
was victim to a tragic inci
dent.
“We are so excited
to add Goose to the depart
ment and see all the ways
that he will be helpful to
this community,’’ Assistant
Chief Robert Gavin said.
“Someone suggested nam
ing him Goose after Mav
erick’s co-pilot in the movie
Top Gun. It fits perfectly for
what he will be doing here.
He will be our co-pilot every
day.’’

City Appoints Executive Directors for
Housing, Homelessness Initiatives

of two new leaders to help
guide the City’s work in
housing and homelessness
through partnership with
Housing Savannah, Inc. and
the Interagency Council on
Homelessness (ICH). Ef
fective Oct. 24, Laura Lane
McKinnon is serving as the
executive director of Hous
ing Savannah, and starting
today, Stephanie Kaple has
taken the helm as executive
director of the Interagency
Council on Homelessness.
“The City of Sa
vannah is excited to have
leaders on board of Laura
and Stephanie’s caliber to
help guide these key func
tions as we work with part
ners to optimize our efforts
in housing and homeless
ness,’’ said City Manager Jo
seph A. Melder. “Their lead
ership will pay dividends for
our community for years to
come and will ensure the
effectiveness of these two
organizations that have been
established to coordinate
our housing and homeless
ness initiatives.’’
Laura Lane McK
innon has been a noted lead
er in the non-profit arena in
Savannah for more than 20
years. She has worked in a
variety of sectors - includ
ing historic preservation,
higher education, home
lessness, intellectual and
developmental disabilities,
and end-of-life healthcare.
McKinnon has extensive
experience with grant writ
ing and reporting, program
management, communica
tions and marketing, events,
fund development, and vol
unteer management.
Stephanie Kaple is
an advocate for the home
less and affordable hous
ing, working on community
housing challenges for more
than 15 years. She is origi
nally from Ohio and began
her professional career with
the Florida Keys Outreach
Coalition (FKOC), growing
within the agency to become
the executive director. In
her time at FKOC, Kaple
worked to expand services
to special needs populations,
increase homelessness pre
vention programs, and re
duce barriers to services. In
2021, she moved to Savan
nah to join the team at Union
Mission Inc., overseeing
their Special Needs Housing
Programs. While at Union
Mission, Kaple was a mem
ber of the Strategic Planning
Committee and worked to
strengthen and increase ser
vices throughout Chatham
County and surrounding
communities to those expe
riencing homelessness.
Wallace Selected as Savannah Technical
College’s 2023 EAGLE Nominee
Joshua Wallace
has been selected as the
2023 Savannah Technical
College Exceptional Adult
Georgian in Literacy Educa
tion (EAGLE) recipient.
“Joshua was an ex
cellent student, who not only
invested in himself, but also
invested his time into help
ing his classmates succeed,’’
said STC Adult Education
Instructor Marvin Williams.
“Joshua’s future is bright; he
believes in himself and he
believes in others, which are
two characteristics that will
help ensure his success.’’
He earned his
GED in October 2022 and is
enrolled as a Business Man
agement student for Spring
2023. He would like to own
his own business and be
come a successful entrepre
neur.
The EAGLE Lead
ership Institute recognizes
and honors those students
who have demonstrated su
perior achievement in adult
education classes. Selection
criteria include student char
acter, attitude, attendance,
leadership and community
involvement and activities.
From this group, one stu
dent is selected to represent
the local program at the
state EAGLE Leadership
Institute (March 1-2, 2023).
The Institute provides work
shops in leadership topics to
build on the strong leader
ship characteristics the stu
dent already exhibits.
EAGLE is the first
statewide program in the
nation that recognizes and
rewards excellence among
students enrolled in adult
education programs. This
student recognition program
is designed to create greater
awareness of educational
opportunities available in
local communities across
the state and to foster great
er involvement in lifelong
learning pursuits.
Every EAGLE
delegate is considered an
ambassador and spokesper
son for literacy serving local
communities and the state by
promoting lifelong learning.
Since its inception in 1993,
the EAGLE Award program
has recognized more than
1,600 outstanding students
across the state. In addition
al to serving as volunteer
role models for family mem
bers, friends, neighbors and
co-workers, EAGLE dele
gates serve as mentors, peer
tutors, and recruiters of oth
er students into local adult
education programs. The
Technical College System
of Georgia (TCSG) through
its Office of Adult Education
sponsors the annual EAGLE
Leadership Institute. For a

Savannah Tech’s
Adult Education Program
serves those who need to im
prove their basic literacy and
math skills, improve their
oral and written English,
practice for the GED® test
to attain a high school equiv
alency degree, and prepare
for college. Instructors also
help students with science
and social studies test prepa
ration for GED® testing.
STC teaches adult education
classes in the morning, af
ternoon, evening and online.
